OK, so very few rifles, and fewer shooters even have the capability of hitting a 4" target at 1000 yards, so to talk 1000 yards and to do it, are two totally different things. Even to hit and kill a coyote, again 4" kill zone, at 500 yards is a feat in of itself. So let's be realistic and keep it at 500 yards and less, and at those ranges a .243 will be hard to beat.

Listen to Howler - He is telling you the real deal.

Inexpensive gun and scope that can shoot 4" groups at 1,000 yards is not very probable even in a snipers hands.

How about working your way up to it......................First.

BTW - A 7MM is one of the 1,000 yard cartridges you were asking about.

Dryridge, you hit the nail on the head. I dont care about pelts. I dont know if I wll ever be good enough to hit a target at 1000yds but I will be taking shots between 500 & 700yds for sure. My buddy is picking up a Rem. 700 in a .223 this weekend and ima bout 2 weeks away from having the money saved for what ever I decide to buy. I will have a chance to try his .223 so that may help. Thanks for the 260 tip. I never said I wanted an inexpencive rifle. I know that what I want to accomplish wont come cheap. I load my own so I know how to work up a load. Dont understand the working my way up to it statement. I figure that I have been working up to it already. Not only is a shot at 300yds+ not easy to do, but I am consistant and will take that shot on game with confidence. Im not a newbee to shooting. Just at that distance, is new territory for me. Thanks for all your advice and I will let yall know what I decide on.

The .223 is NOT a "500-700" yard coyote killing caliber. It just don't have enough punch that far for anything more than a prairie dog. Gonna have to step up to at least a .24 cal. to have enough energy to dump coyotes, if you can hit them, at 500-700 yards.

..........Let alone wind problems with the lighter bullet at those ranges....Go heavier...At least 24 cal.

Powerfisher,

I looked back at your original post and sure enough - no suggestion of inexpensive (Sorry !).

So, 243 would be a good cartridge at 500 + yards.

But if you don't care about the pelts consider a 7MM or if you feel confident with your 30-06 - work up a hot load and go get'em.

Let us know what you end up with and good luck !

For really long range, I'd get a hot 6mm or 6.5mm like the 6X284 or 6.5X284. You need a high BC and MV for 1000 yards!

You might also consider the 25/'06 and the 257 Weatherby Magnum in a heavy barreled varmint rifle.

I guess if I dont care about the pelts I could use the Remington Sendero .338 Ultra Mag I spose. Thats a lot of recoil, so I have read. The 30.06 makes a bit of sence too but then I dont have a reason to buy another rifle. Hmmmmm....6.5mm huh? I like that idea. Time for some more research.
