Hey 'Todd', what about .270 WSM...doesn't that qualify as short action?

Marlin XL7....I own one in .270 Win. and one in 30.06 Sprg. Both awesome rifles. The .270 Win is the best shooting rifle I have ever owned. Coupled with the super soft butt pillar bedding, its gonna be hard to beat as a long range consistent deer killer. You will be very hard pressed to find someone who actually owns one to cast aspersions on it.

Looking forward to getting a short action model soon. (Marlin XS7 line)

Just my $.02

Both are good guns and I have heard nothing but good things about the Marlin, but if it were me I would spend $100 more and buy the Thompson Center Venture. It is a great gun and shoots like a gun that cost 3 times as much. 1" MOA at 100 yards guaranteed. Awesome gun!!!

Don't believe I have ever read negative feedback from an XL7 owner. I own one and it shoots sub MOA groups with factory and handloads. Tikka's are nice guns but I would rather buy a product to keep a fellow American employed. Buy a Marlin before they jack up the price.

I have heard good things about the marlin xl-7 but never shot one. I own a tikka and its sub moa with factory ammo. The tikka's accuracy still shocks me every time I shoot it. Puts my rem 700 to shame. The tikka action is smooth and the trigger is excellent. I believe the marlin has an adjustable trigger too. Both are probably a good choice but I vote tikka just because I have one and love it. Before you buy check out the weatherby vanguard. Its in the same price range and a very good gun.

oh yeah, the tikka has a 1' group guarantee.

Never shot a Marlin so I can't comment on that gun. But I did buy a Tikka T3 in a .308 two years ago and it's a tack driver!! Glad I went with that gun at the time, action is butter smooth as well.

Lets see, a $650 rifle that is good, and a $289 rifle that is just as good. Go with the Marlin and buy a nice scope with the savings. I have the XL7 and it's a very nice rifle for the price.

I just bought a M-70 extreme weather in 300 win mag. I wish I would have looked at the Marlin before I dropped my money on that gun:eek2: What a nice rifle.
