BigJ's "Show & Tell" (Lever Guns)
Ok folks, it's time for another installment of BigJ's Show and Tell. Today I'll focus on some of my lever guns. They range from the ordinary to the extremely rare. I hope you enjoy.....

RE: BigJ's "Show & Tell" (Lever Guns)
Very nice BigJ.
Is that 12 gauge the same model used in Terminator 2? I don't currently own a lever gun. I had a Rossi .44 Mag top ejecting lever action a long time ago. Fun to shoot, but not very accurate and the action wasn't very smooth. I'd really like to get a Marlin big-bore guide gun in stainless steel and laminate stocks. I think they look really sharp and would be great for the times I want to tromp through the really think stuff where shots are short and quick. Mike |

Nive lever guns. Levers are my favorite to carry. I'll post some pics later maybe!

Mike I'm not sure if it was or not, I'd have to see the movie again. It's a cool old shotgun, it was designed by John M. Browning. The Model 1887 is one of the most unusual actions ever made by Winchester and was made from 1887 to 1901. Only about 65,000 were ever produced. It's a rolling block design shotgun and was chambered in 12 and 10 gauge. As stated this particular shotgun was made in 1888 so it's a pretty early model (2nd year of production) I have a feeling that as time goes by this shotgun will become even more and more collectible. Ya just don't see that many around these days. I too like the Marlin S/S guide gun. I'd like to get one as well to keep my old Marlin 444 company. Thanks for looking and happy Independence Day! |

RE: BigJ's "Show & Tell" (Lever Guns)
Awesome collection!!! I love the fact that all your lever guns don't have a scope on them. ;)
I have a Marlin 30AS (Sears) .30-30 that I bought off an old co-worker I used to work with. This rifle just sat in his closet for years, as he no longer hunted. So, he let me borrow it for a weekend back then, and I instantly fell in love with it. That next Monday at work, I gave him $200 bucks for it, and it was mine. (It originally had a fixed 4x32 scope on it, which I immediately took off and hocked on eBay). ![]() |

Man, Butch, that rifle's got some darn fine looking wood on it for a Marlin. $200 was a good deal.

That's a sweet looking rifle you have there Butch, I hate to disapoint you though. I put a 3-9X40 on my new rifle a couple of days ago. I agree that the gun looks and feels better without the scope, but with my eyesight it's not fair to the animals that I'm shooting at. My next project though will turn this setup into a squirrel, rabbit, coyote, armadillo, fall turkey, raccoon, possum, and otter killing machine. Probably should put more emphasis on the squirrels and armadillo's though. As soon as I find a set of RCBS 30-30 dies I'm going to make a load with 5.4 grains of Unique behind one pellet of single 0 Buckshot. This setup should get 1157 fps and the test that I read about this load it should hit close to my deer load at under 50 yards. For about $20 I can buy a five pound bag of buckshot, which has 720 balls in it. I'm hoping that by the time i'm done my new 336ss will be the families favorite plinking gun.

Nice looking rifle ButchA! I agree about the scopes as well but I understand if someone puts one on. Me I have plenty of scoped rifles, I don't need them on my levers. Thanks for looking guys and stay tuned for another installment. I'm not sure exactly which ones yet but I think I'll move to shot guns for the next one. |

RE: BigJ's "Show & Tell" (Lever Guns)
Thanks, guys... Yeah, I couldn't pass up that old Marlin 30AS rifle. It had a Glenfield 4x32 fixed scope on it and worked perfectly fine. But to me, it just didn't look right. So, I took it off and then picked up the little filler screws for the receiver top from a gun store.
Some guys put scopes on their lever guns, and that's fine. I just prefer having it with the plain open sights. I use it in the thick heavy brush, briars, and thickets, where I might only have a shot of 50, 60, 75 yards at max. For longer ranges, I have my Savage 110 with a very nice Bushnell 3-9x40 scope on it. I have the scope set at 1" high at 100 yards. I figured I have to different rifles for two different types of terrain. |
