shooting sticks?
 

I purchased one of the single leg shooting sticks & I am not having much luck w/ it. Just seems to unstable. Is there a technique or did I waste my money?

It seems if one holds the top of the shooting stick forward, it is more stable. Good luck.

I wouldn't say you wasted your money but it's only slightly more than slightly better than shooting off hand. A bipod is the way to go for long range shots.

Wanted to mention that last year I shot a doe at 143 yards using a mono-pod from the standing position. So they do work you just have to limit your distance.

Shooting sticks, with two legs, are better than a mono-pod for sure, especially if you're shooting from a sitting position. I like sticks that aren't attached to my rifle for calling coyotes, but if I were to be hunting something such as prairie dogs or maybe deer, I'd opt for a bi-pod that is attached to my rifle.

The bipod shooting sticks I have is very stable.

personally I think the best way to go is to make your own bi-pod.

two sticks, a pin or bolt/nut, you can quickly adjust heights simply by moving the legs further apart or closer together, faster than any store bought I've seen, I have a bi-pod too I bought first, but height adjustments take too long, especially in the field.

I have both a monoleg and bi-leg shooting sticks. If I am planing to be on the ground I use the bi-leg sticks if I am in my stand which has rails that are to low to rest your rifle on I use the mono braced against the rail and stuck into the floor grate it makes for a rock solid rest out to 400+ yards.
