Any advantage to replacing syn. stock on Model 70?
 

Is there any advantage to replace my factory synthetic stock on a model 70, such as weight reduction or accuracy?

Is that all you plan on doing is just putting a synthetic stock on your gun? I put a McMillan stock on my Model 70 338 Winnie last year and also had it glass bedded and free floated. Also had the trigger set to 3 1/2 pounds. It was a decent shooter before, but it' s my most accurate gun that I have now. My `smith did a great job, I think, and I print 3/4 inch groups and sometimes smaller if I do my part.

I replaced my stock stock with an HS Precision in the hope it would fix a wandering zero. Didn' t make any difference (I think the scope is the problem), but didn' t hurt either. Added a little weight however.

Before you spend over a hundred bucks or more on a new stock you might want to see about having the action and the first three or four inches of the barrel glass bedded and free float the rest of the barrel. And before you do that try puting a little pressure on the barrel on the end of the stock by folding up a business card or a few layers of masking tape and slipping it between the stock and the barrel. Also make sure that all of your action screws are all torqued the same and not too tight you only want them a little over hand tight.

I' m assuming you are asking because you are not happy with the accuracy of your rifle?
