I'd buy a semi-automatic.From my perspective the only birds I'll hunt are turkeys,doves,and the occasional duck hunt.So take my opinion from one who is not that much into bird hunting.

I like my Benelli SBII, and my 11-87, but just a thought for you. You could use your 870 for waterfowl or whatever and buy an O/U for upland hunting and trap shooting. However, if you do go with a semi-auto I would recommend one with the Inertia system. I took my 11-87 apart once and that was last, but I'm not that mechanically inclined either. The Benelli gets taken apart probably more than needed but it's just so dang easy.
I have been told that you may feel less recoil with a gas operated auto, but Ithink that was from my nephewwho shoots a Browning Gold. We tend to disagree sometimes he drives a Chevy I drive Ford for example. Anyway, unless its a real piece of junk there's nothing wrong with any new gun!!!
