would like your help
like you all know lately i have been doing my homework for my next purchase. it has come down to several calibers . it is ashame some that i wanted to get i had to turn away from due to either remington and ruger only chambering them or that the gun' s feeling awkward in my hands.
i have been out of work due to back surgery and have decided to got out with my girlfriend to get out of the house. i am thinking about getting a new gun tommorrow and hopefully will return home with one. now i am leaning twards these calibers.... A-bolt composite stalker 25-06rem A-bolt hunter 7mm-08rem Ruger international 308win win sporter LT. / compact 7mm-08rem. unfortunatly there are others but they either did not fit me or did not come in a gun i liked or has iron sights. |
RE: would like your help
The A-bolt comp stalker in 25-06 would make a great pronghorn rig. The Ruger International chambered in .308 would make an awesome woods rifle. The A-bolt hunter and Win Lt Sptr Compact both in 7mm-08 should be superb do-all rig for medium to large non-dangerous game out to 300-350 yards.

RE: would like your help
Quilly I was looking at a Browning Stalker at a gunshow today and it is a nice rifle . I thought about buying it but didn' t raise my hand quick enough . What do they normally go for anyway . This one they had was new and went for $425.00 which seemed pretty reasonable to me .

Halcon...
if will be used for deer and if i get a chance black bear. it seems that you guys are the only ones that seem to want to give me your advice and i thank you both for it. i really wanted i ruger mark II ultra light in 257roberts but decided against it after i would have to spend more $$ putting a new trigger into it and glass baedding the barrel. there also was the 260rem but did not like the ruger compact and the remington model 7 ( will never buy a rem again ! ) but i decided on not going up today due to me ripping stiches in my back last night while sleeping. but i am goning up this week sometime. does anyone know if i can install iron sights on a browning? i am thinking of the composite stalker in 25-06rem. |
RE: would like your help
A bolt hunter 7mm-08. would love it out here, great deer round and easy to pack around.[8D]
|
RE: would like your help
will never by a rem again |
RE: would like your help
the ruger compact' s don' t feel right when i shoulder them. maybe it is the stock length. too small for me.
|
RE: would like your help
I think I would opt for the A-Bolt or the Winchester in 7mm-08. Great round in great rifles. I like the shorter bolt throw and three lug bolt on the Browning but I have always really liked Winchesters. They allways seem to just work.
By the way Quilly, I' ll never buy another Remington either. Had a 7600 once and traded it on a Ruger M77 7mm mag. Bought a 597 .22LR and have had problems with it ever since I bought it. Called Remington and after the crap service they gave and the way this rifle functions, or doesn' t function, they won' t be getting any more of my money. It only takes one time! |
RE: would like your help
i am down to the ruger international in 243win. or the A-bolt composite stalker in 25-06rem and the BLR 81 in 358win.
atleast the ruger and the BLR have iron sights. |
RE: would like your help
Quilly you must be looking over my shoulder ,the guns you like are the ones I like too . I bought a Ruger #1 RSI with the full stock in 243 Win today along with a Winchester model 70 FW Classic in 6.5X55 . I think I got a pretty good deal , I paid $ 400 for the #1 and $325.00 for the model 70 . They were both new in the box . It might take me awhile to get out of the dog house but I just had a weak moment . LOL Halcon

RE: would like your help
I bought an A-Bolt Composite Stalker in .270 a few months ago for $509. That' s the cheapest I could find, by far.
$425 sounds like it would have been a steal. |
RE: would like your help
$325.00 or the model 70 |

RE: would like your help
personally , i like the .25-06 or the blr 81 in .358 win.
BTW- didn' t the browning a bolt hunter model have iron sites on it ??? i remember at one time they did , is it still an option ??? :D:D |
RE: would like your help
Treedog ,You paid the normal price ,I just happened to get these at a auction where they were selling a private collection . This guy had donated the guns to a charity . There was over 750 guns in his collection . Most of them went for less than wholesale . I was just luck to be able to get some that I wanted at a very good price .
Whelen according to gun list the A bolt don' t come with sights . They auctioned off about 30 of them there today and none of them had sights . I could be mistaken but thats what my book says . |
RE: would like your help
whelen36...
at a time they might of came with iron sights. but as of now the only gun that comes with or without iron sights is the BLR' s and the BAR' s. i am gonna go with the browning composite stalker in 25-06rem.or the ruger international in 243win. hopefully i can get iron sights installed on it. |
RE: would like your help
What is it about Ruger you don' t like? I suggest you get a No. 1A in 7X57mm. I' ve had one since 1976, and it is as good as or better than any other hunting rifle I have owned, from Mann. Schoenauers to Heyms to J.P. Sauers to Win. M70 Pre-64 Super Grades....

RE: would like your help
eldeguello..
i like the idea of iron sights. i have nothing against ruger firearms but i hear you have to replace the trigger or get it wored on to get the trigger down to where it should be. i was also thinking of the ultra light mark II M77 in 257roberts but it does not come W/iron sights. my girlfriends father has one just like yours ( don' t know which one it is model wise ) but it does not fit me at all. plus i don' t have that much money to shell out. since i don' t reload and won' t be doing so int he furture would leave me using 120gr. 7X57 instead of 140gr. due to factory loadngs.also i would like to get a caliber smaller than the .284 so it leads me to.. ruger international 243win. browning BLR 81' 25-06rem browning BLR 81' 358win browning stalker 25-06rem |
RE: would like your help
halcon , the last time that i remember the hunter version having iron sights was back in the late 80' s and early 90' s buddy :D:D:D , so when i said that , it was more of a question if they still offered them. thanks for letting me know as i like the idea of iron sights as well as a back up if the scope takes a dump on you.
of course the iron' s don' t help for long shots or give the accuracy you can achieve with good handloads a chance ( if you handload ) :D:D:D:D |
RE: would like your help
Quilly, have you looked at the Howa' s yet?, the laminate stock not synthetic. I have one in .223 Varminter configuration, smooth very smooth. I have a model 700 ADL in 257 Roberts that is also a nice gun. I agree with you to want sights on it as a backup if the glass is damaged.
|
RE: would like your help
Quilly the international Rugers come with iron sights ,at least mine has them .
Whelen the Miroku company that makes the a-bolt series stopped putting sights on them in 1993 , so You were right about that being from a earlier time . I just remembered reading about the sights when I was pricing guns that I wanted to bid on in this auction I went to over the weekend . I do handload everything I shoot and have been since I was still a kid . I haven' t been a kid for a looong time . Halcon. |
RE: would like your help
Quilly, I noticed that you dropped the 7mm08 off your ' wish list" ; why? I' m asking for two reasons one is that I' m interested in picking one up this summer and the other is that it' s the one I was going to recommend to you as I know you hunt the Maine wods too.
|
RE: would like your help
NE Hunter..
reason being i already own a 308win and the 7mm-08rem is close with it. i would rather pick a 358win if i had to get a caliber close to the ones i already own. but i guess kittery is been having problems with getting the BLR 81' in 358win. if i decide to get a short action is might be the 243win. something differant. |

RE: would like your help
robert scott..
the 338-06 would be a awsome rifle. too bad i don' t reload. i would like to find a 8mm rem mag. i have thought on many occasions about the 223. just that i would rather have a gun i could hunt with bseides small varmit' s. since i hunt deer more than i would hunt varmit' s.most of the nice firearms that chamber the 223 are out since i am not allowed to buy them. i would like a nice 44 mag ruger deerfield but the same goes with a rifle using handgun ammo. i am always fond of being the unique one in the deer woods with a differant caliber than the rest. BTW.. you are not annoying me. this is why i posted this. i can' t make up my mind. |
RE: would like your help
Quilly, You have good taste in rifles, I am going to order a BLR ' 81 in .358 win Friday. A 25-06 would be a good mild caliber round to add to your .308 and 35 whelen. You could use it for varmits, coyetes and deer. If you hunt out west it would make a good mule deer and pronghorn load.:)

RE: would like your help
From what you posted in the past, Quilly, all your guns that you own (well, the one' s that you posted here) overlap and will all do the same thing to a deer with very similiar success, if not identical success. I suggest a varmint caliber, like, 223 or 22-250, or make a big jump and get yourself a big magnum. Just my opinion.:D
|
RE: would like your help
Quilly, although I might get some funny looks for this one, the 223 will kill whitetail just as well as a 6mm or a .257, shot placement is key. I have a few friends that have been hunting deer with a 222, one since he was a kid the others switched as they got older and didn' t want to deal with the higher recoil. They fill their tags every year.

RE: would like your help
Quilly, How about a .444 Marlin good brush gun and i know you hunt up here in the thick stuff.
|
RE: would like your help
Ne hunter...
i have thought about the 444marlin at one time but decided against it as far as i remmber there are one or two tyes of ammo for it? and if i would get a 444marlin i would rather get the next size up. a 45-70. Otis.. i would love to get a ruger deerfield carbine in 44mag. but unfortunatly i cannot get one due to it shoots handgun ammo which i cannot get that license in my town/state. i am thinking right now the 358win or the 7mm-08rem in a BLR 81' |
RE: would like your help
I' d go with the 308 in a browning A-bolt hunter, seeing how you are thinking of using it for black bear and also deer. Zeak

RE: would like your help
maybe you should consider the 30-06, its a perfect north american game gun[8D]
|
RE: would like your help
hotgunner21..
i already own 2 of them. but as of right now i think i am gonna go with a BLR lightning in the 7mm-08rem if i can find one lying around. or a BLR 81' in 358win. i would like the 25-06rem. but untill i can find a place where i could utilize a caliber in fields that might have to be in the backburner. i would also like to thank you all in your opinion' s and from personal choice. i am glad there are froums out there like this one ! |
