Remington 700 Issues .300 WSM
 

Well, I just recently purchased a SPS Stainless 700 in .300 WSM and took it out to the range today for the first time. After the first shot the bolt is sticking when I try to lift it to pull the bolt back. So I shoot a few more rounds and it is continueing to do this. I switch to a different brand of ammo and have the same problem. When lifting the bolt the brass is not turning in the chamber after being fired. The bolt is shaving the edge of the brass off the rim of the cartridge it is so tight. So I took it to the local gun shop and had them look at it and few empty brass to see what it was doing. We put another 300 WSM bolt in from another 700 off the shelf and it seemed this one was doing the same in my gun. So the gun shop is sending the gun back to Remington. The guy at the gun shop said he though either the chamber was rough or the headspacing was wrong. What do guys think?

I had the same problem w/ a 700 7mag. My handloads were chambering really tight but the same rounds cycled smoothly in a savage I had in the same caliber. I think its head spacing. Thankfully I havent had any problems w/ my 700 7-08. Good luck.

Did you clean the gun before you fired it the first time? Most likely there was stuff in the chamber from manufacturing and if you didn't clean the chamber and bore first it would have resulted in your problem.


If your gun shop just pulled a bolt from another gun and used it in your rifle to fire a cartridge he is an idiot. That could have resulted in head space being way off and bad things happening to your gun and him. If he did do this I would not let him touch my rifle ever again.

He just pulled a bolt from another gun and used it to cycle some of the spent brass through my gun. He did not fire the gun with the other bolt in. He just did that to see if it was problem with the chamber or the bolt.

O.K. Good to hear that he didn't fire the gun with another bolt.

It sounds like it has already been sent back to Remington but if not....... Take a non fired cartridge and tape a piece of masking tape on the case head. Trim with a razor blade so that it does not stick out past the side of the case and try to close the bolt. If it closes easily the head space is likely excessive. If it is hard to close the bolt then it most likely isn't head space but more likely a rough chamber or possibly ammo loaded too hot.

Sent back to Remington, so I guess we will see what they have to say.

I can understand your frustation, but hang in there ,Remington will make it right. I also have a stainless .300 WSM and it has been working flawlessly with two different brands of factory ammo. This is my sixth model 700 and they have all worked perfectly and were good shooters. I once sent to Remington for a new front sight and hood from a BDL to install on an ADL for a friend, asked them to billit to a CC number and they sent it at no charge. They will find and correct the problem. Read some of the current articles in some of the shooting mags and you'll be real pleased with the caliber choice you've made-----John R

300WSM in a Remington.... well there's your problem..... hehehe

For real though, we have to date, sent 23 Remington 700's back for the exact same issue.

Reasons vary according to who you speak with at Remington..... from tooling marks, burrs, ect in the chamber to headspace deficiencies to bolt and extractor problems.

The Big Green aint what it used to be... by no means!
