I have an old savage 110 , back in 94 I burned $100 on Win Fed and Rem 150s 165s 180s 200s. Best group was 6". A guy gave me about 100 lake city 42s bang 2" groups. With a hand load I get 5 touching 3 over lapping.
Premium bullets ? 10s of 1000s elk deer moose and bison/buffalo have been killed dead with in 50ft at way over 100 yards with bare and paper patched dead soft lead bullets and patched round balls. Go shoot the heck out of those cup and core bullets they've proably killed a mire 50-60,000 of the mentioned game. What ever did we shoot back in the 80s ?

I only shoot for pratice once in a while. I found some low cost(18.00) Federal 150 grain bullets for my o6 and bought 5 boxes, They shot and killed just as good as any handload or premium bullet I ever tried. The 3 shot groups were less than 3/4 inch. Also bought some cheap winchester .308 power points for my old Savage 99 and it would put em 1/2' and it too killed a big buck this past Nov. I'm not about to pay 54 $ a box for shells. My .243 shoots Remington Coreloks into tiny groups and kills deer like lighting.

Update:
I went back to the range with another box of inexpensive Winchester 130gr .270 ($17/box of 20) and took the best steady rest I could come up with and took 3 shots at 100 yards. These 3 shots could be covered with a quarter.
Conculsion: Out of the box Savage .270win with factory scope and inexpensive ammo and a steady rest is capable of 1" groups at 100 yards.
Thanks to everyone for your replys.

if you're putting five real shots within a two inch circle at 100 yards, you're fine. The deer will be dead. And the high-dollar ammo will not kill them any better. If you want better than 2" - which ain't all that bad, in my world - try some Federals powershoks or Winchester powerpoints. My 30-30 prefers Federals, but they all work okay.
