Just a bit to the left.
I went out and got my 9 year old his first .22. JC Higgens Single Shot Bolt action.I got a used one for is first rifle. Took it out and it shoots to the left about 6" it 50yds. The front sight is fixed and the rear sight is adjustable for vertical only and I can not adjust it from left to right. Guy at the gun shop told me to "carefully bend the barrel a wisker" to get it straight. I dont know about that, I figure I can scope it before I screw up the barrel. What do ya think?

Bend the barrel... was he sober? Really though, bending the barrel was once a cure for a problemsuch as that.
One of our ancient gunsmiths advises to bend the front sight instead of the barrel. He said it takes something of skill and a barrel press to bend the barrel. As edequello said... put a scope on it. |

Anyone who says "bend the barrel" is clearly too stupid to be working in a gun shop, particularly if part of the job description is dispensing advice to new gun owners... |
RE: Just a bit to the left.
Or you can put a Williams receiver sight on it. I think that everyone should learn to shoot with rifle sights before moving over to telescopic sights. There's a lot more hand/eye coordination required to shoot well with iron sights, which will make him a better rifleman in the end. Get the micrometer adjustable version, and you'll have just the ticket for your son's little .22

RE: Just a bit to the left.
Check on replacing the rear sight or scope it.
