There is a forum on milsurpshooter.net just for this. Some of the ideas sound real. I think you are on the right track with the heat thing though.

ANy heat source will do... just becareful not to warp the stock. I've used a heat gun to draw out the oil until I didsovered that I could set the rifle in front of my fireplace. When you get alot of oil out, use a degreaser such as Purple Power or Janitor in a Bucket and then reheat, degrease, reheat etc. With most rifles i've found that I needed to degrease it about 3 times before refinishing.
