What cartridge is this ???
[align=left]When did they first start using center fire primers?[/align][align=left]I'm trying to identify a cartridge I found yesterday. It is 1/2" in diameter(.50 cal?), 1 3/4" long, it is rimmed, there is a center fire primer,and there is NO stamped ID on the bottom.[/align][align=left]I'm trying to add some pictures.[/align]

I'm guessing 50/70. It was the first cartridge adopted by the army after the Civil War. It pre-dated the 45/70. Surplus military rifles were available to civilians after the gov't switched calibers.

I wish it could talk! I found it not 12 miles from Ft. Laramie,WY . . . it was an Army Cavalryoutpost in the 1800's. |
