.270/Mule deer

I am going to eastern Colorado on a mule deer hunt this fall and I am planning on using my old trusty .270 w/ 130 grain bullets. In the past I have always used the remington core-lok bullets mainly for economics & they appeared to perform well on the range & in the field. Also I generally have never shot past 100 yds around here as I hunt areas where visiblity is limited. Would I be well advised to invest in an upgraded load such as the nosler partition or sierra bow tail? Any thoughts?

That Corelokt load is plenty good for mule deer. You do not need to switch!

Mule deer aint any harder to kill than the Kansas whitetails you have ben hunting.I wouldn't change anything.

That is the exact combination that I use, unless I'm hunting elk at the same time. You have no need to change at all.

Can anyone tell me the trajectory on a .270/130 grain bullet? Looking @ sighting in one inch high @ 100 & curious about down range point of impact say out to 300.

I have this load zeroed at 100 yards to have the following at 300 yards with a 10mph wind.

Drop -11.59, wind drift 8.57 in., velocity 2,259fps, 1,472ft/lbs, and 0.34 sec flight time.

Kansas...I use a .243 and dropped a whitetail at 277 ranged yards this year with the 100gr CoreLokt, so you have plenty of bullet for mule deer...

Now...This is important...Sight that .270 in for 2-3 inches high at 100 yards...Most of my hunting is over crop fields in eastern NC and in many fields I can see 800 yards or better...I try to keep shots within 300 yards...Sighted in say 2 1/2 high at 100 with that bullet you should be about 2 low at 250 and 5-6 low at 300...So at 250 you hold for a high shoulder shot and 300 hold on the back or just below...Now, you need to shoot your gun to see exactly how it works out, but that will be pretty close...

Sighting in a .270 dead on or an inch high at 100 yards is like putting rabbit ears on a 48 inch flat screen TV...:D

Second...Buy a good range finder...When looking over flat terrain it gets hard to guess distances once you get past 150 yards or so...With a range finder and the drop of the bullets you are shooting taped to the butt stock of that .270, you will be good to go...I'd practice out to 350 yards...

1.5 " high at 100 yds for a 200 yd zero will put you about 7 " low at 300. 2.5 " high at 100 for a 250 yd zero 4" low at 300.
