AR question
 

Hey guys i was wondering about AR's in 308. I see on Gunbroker that there are uppers and lower parts to them. If i bought an upper and a lower separately all i'd have to do is put them together and i could go shooting right? Are the 308 AR's reliable? Please enlighten me on the AR. Thanks.

Correct-all you would have to do is assemble upper & lower as long as they are complete. The lower-even if stripped, still counts as an whole firearm. I have some ARs myself and they are VASTLY improved over the 1st M-16s.

Some clarification, since it's come up before: Be sure your upper and lower are for the same caliber weapon.

You're certainly not asking that, but in the past there've been questions raised along the line of "can I convert my current .223 AR to .308 simply by changing the upper receiver"?

Very simply, "no"

No offense intended, in all likelihood you already understand that. However,there may be someone out there who'll read your question and wonder....

No offense taken and thanks for clearing that up. I was pretty sure that i couldnt mix and match a 223 upper/lower and a 308 upper/lower, but since im not concerned about the 223 i really wasnt even thinking about it. If i get one it will be in something other than 223, preferably the 308.

I'm not concerned about recoil, but is the .308 the same recoil-free weapon that the .223 is??

As I just stated on another post, I recently bought one (.223)and I honestly didn't know that different caliber uppers aren't interchangeable.I guess there must be conversion kits then??

You CANNOT convert AR 15 in .223 to AR 10 .308. The AR 10 is longer.

Probably need a further clarification here. Cartridge OAL is essentially what determines "interchangeability" when it comes to the AR platform. There ARE some uppers that will marry up to your .223 lower:

9mm Para
.204 Ruger
6.8mm SPC
7.62x39mm

Of course, you'll need different uppers and bolt assemblies, as well as different/modified magazines.

As has been mentioned above, and to simply drive the point home, you can't mix and match AR10 upper and lowers with AR15 uppers and lowers. The .243, .260, and .308 uppers will have to be married with AR10 lowers. Many other calibers are available that will work with the AR15 lower such as but not limited to the .223, .204, 223 wssm, .243 wssm., .25 wssm, 6.5 grendal, etc.,
The AR10's will be heavierbut will still have more felt recoil than the smaller calibers in the AR15's.
