Default Remington Sportsman 48 20 gauge

Hey guys,
I just inherited a sportsman 48 from my dad, and I'm looking to do some changes to it, namely the barrel, and the chamber. The chamber is only a 2+1 right now, but if it's possible I'd like to get it at least a 4+1. And about the barrel, I'd like to shorten it, to at least a 20". Is that possible with this type of gun, and if it is, what parts would be compatible?

Thanks for the help.

You're talking about increasing the magazine capacity, NOT a change to the chamber. It probably has an easily removeable chamber plug to hold 2+1. Just take the cap off the mag tube & remove the plug- a wooden dowel, probably.

I would not cut the barrel-will lose all choke effect to do so.

Yeah sorry not chamber, but magazine. I'll check out the plug deal. Also no, I don't want to cut the barrel, I want to replace it, if it's possible. I have found some remington 20 gauge barrel's online, but I don't know if they would fit the sportsman 48 model or what. This is my first shotgun, I'm more of a handgun guy honestly.

I think you'll need a barrel specifically made for that gun. Contact NumrichGun Parts CORP,and/or place ads in classified sections of gun boards like this one.

That was a pretty popular gun back in the day, so barrels should be available somewhere.

I got it, it's dimples on the inside of the magazine, I just have to get in there with a file and file 'em down. now to find a file that fits inside the magazine.

Might be able to just drill out the dimples from the outside rather than filing them out.

Befor you start filing or drilling dimples in the mag tube I would find out what I had first, premier grademodels 48s are going for a couple of grand depending on the condition, standard grade in good condition are still worth 4 to 475.00.I cant recall the 48 haveing dimples on the mag tube though!, are you sure its not a 58, the dimples in the mag tube seperate the gas system from the magazine, if it is a 58, they need to be there.

My dad had a 58...I'd leave the modifications alone and hunt with it as is...
