What would be recommended for a good caliber for deer, elk, moose, etc......

If you actually liked getting the scope-eye from that .338, then feel free to step up to a cartridge that burns nearly 2x as much powder as your '06. However, you really won't be giving up much to go to a touch smaller caliber, providing you practice enough to put the bullets where they're supposed to go.
Just one man's opinion.

Never been bumped by a scope on a .338, but I usually use a Leupold 2.5x8 on them that has good eye relief. I even had one(my favorite elk rifle) for many years that weighed 7.0 lbs. with scope, slingand ammo.
My favorite loads for the .338 are Nosler 210 partitions pushed by a healthy dose of RL 19. I have had several .338 rifles and they all loved the 210 NP.

Ron.....I tried the RL 19 with the 210 NP's, and had little luck in MY gun..Model 70 Win. XTR... But we all know guns are individuals unto themselves, and it sooner or later will tell me what IT wants to eat.... If I thought bedding was an issue, I'd take care of that, but it shoots factory 200 gr. ammo sooooo good. Not the bedding.
