What would be recommended for a good caliber for deer, elk, moose, etc......
A few years ago, I would have been in the, "more is better!" camp. However, having hunted with a .30-'06 and a 7x57, and having balanced that experience bydialing-in my new .35 Whelen, I now think I'dsuggest something in the .270 - .30-'06 range, and give you the benediction to blissfully go forth into the woods with complete confidence in your cartridge.

If you actually liked getting the scope-eye from that .338, then feel free to step up to a cartridge that burns nearly 2x as much powder as your '06. However, you really won't be giving up much to go to a touch smaller caliber, providing you practice enough to put the bullets where they're supposed to go.

Just one man's opinion.

Never been bumped by a scope on a .338, but I usually use a Leupold 2.5x8 on them that has good eye relief. I even had one(my favorite elk rifle) for many years that weighed 7.0 lbs. with scope, slingand ammo.
My favorite loads for the .338 are Nosler 210 partitions pushed by a healthy dose of RL 19. I have had several .338 rifles and they all loved the 210 NP.

Ron.....I tried the RL 19 with the 210 NP's, and had little luck in MY gun..Model 70 Win. XTR... But we all know guns are individuals unto themselves, and it sooner or later will tell me what IT wants to eat.... If I thought bedding was an issue, I'd take care of that, but it shoots factory 200 gr. ammo sooooo good. Not the bedding.

If you are interested in a 338 but shy of the recoil you could always look at a 338 Federal.

Forget the big callibers you dont need them. get a remingoton model 700 xcr 270, great for deer or big game all you need to do is raise or lower the bullet grain EX: 130-140 for deer 150 for moose, or elk.
