Recoil question........
 

I'm taking my tax return $$$ and going to havemy Remington XCR customized. I havea local gun shop here with a fantastic reputation for this sort of work.
Going to add a Shillen barrel and a McMillan stock.........here's my delima....

My rifle is currently a .30-06, and I'm trying to decide if I want to keep the 06' or turn this rifle into a .280 (a caliber that I've always wanted)....

I've also always had an itch to have a .300 Win. Mag........

I'm terribly picky about my rifles, so this is really cool to finally get one just how I want it.....but in which caliber???? .280 or .300 Winny???

I'm in east Texas hunting hogs year round (some of which are BIG) and of course whitetail deer.

And......I've never shot a .300. I'm very comfortable with the .270/.30.06/7mm Mag. recoil. I'm not really sure if the Winny will go beyond my tolerance level. I've tried to find someone who has a .300 to shoot a few times, but no luck so far.

Any input would be appreciated

Id seriously look at the Broughton barrels for hogs & deer Id stay with the 30-06 or get the 280

My uncle went from 06 to 300 Win Mag without any problems. He is a smaller guy too. The 300 Mag shouldn't really have too much more recoil than your 7 Mag, but then again a lot of it depends on your rifle setup. Just be sure to have your smith install a nice recoil pad on the rifle to help you out.

I'd stick with the '06. If you just have to have something different, I'd suggest the .280. I'm only 40 (almost), but I've already figured-out that burning more powder to kill critters just as dead doesn't do much for me.

I've been using an '06 myself, & I'm plenty good enough with it. I recently bought a .35 Whelen, & it's not beyond my "tolerance level" for being able to put the bullets where they're supposed to go. I have found, however, that the Whelen is beyond my "fun level", because I have to concentrate really hard on my breathing, sight picture, and squeeeeeeezing to avoid messing things up. And, for Moose/Elk on down, that new Whelen isn't going to offer much advantage over the '06 in killing power. Maybe I need to set up a Grizzly hunt to justify the purchase...

On the other hand, I picked up a 700 Mtn Rifle in 7x57, it's an absolute sweetheart to shoot. And putting 175 grain bullets through it, I'm not sure the '06 would offer much of an edge in killing power on up to the Elk/Moose sized game.

You didn't mention the distances you're talking about shooting, but it's my impression that the .300 WM really starts to outclass the '06-based cartridges past 300 yards or so, when it comes to trajectory.I doubtit would outclass them at all in terms of getting critters dead inside that range.

For hogs & whitetails, this hunter would stay at or below the .30-'06.

I would go for the 280 and if you want a little extra with it get a 280AI. I recently went from a 270 to a 300 WBY likethe bald guy above me said its not beyond my tolerence but I now see how fun my 270 really is to shoot. For normal shooting ranges the 300 is not needed at all, the 270, 280, and 30-06 are plenty out to 500+ yards. The 280AI is very popular among long range hunters and now has a few commercially available loads and would also be a great excuse to start handloading.

If you're concerned about recoil, By ALL means the .280 will cleanly kill anything you have any business shooting at considering the animals you're going to be hunting. The .280 is 1 of my favorite cartridges and don't take a backseat to anything in it's class.

I've talked to a few gunsmiths and they all seem to say that while a VERY accurate .30-06 can be built......they could improve on it's accuracy a tad with the .280 round. I kinda thought that was interesting....

Does that sound right to you folks????

An 06' to a .280 rem would be cheaper, logical and the fact you always wanted one makes it very appealling indeed. For the game you mentioned their is really no need for a winnie and even if you plan to hunt larger game with the availability of quality .284 bullets to chose from you wouldn't be losing anything to the 06' IMHO. My hunting partner has killed a number of elk and moose with his .280 rem. Nosler partitions and failsafe where his choice when he bought factory ammo. He reloads for it now using Barnes TSX and recently Hornady Interbonds for a1 bullet do all (deer & elk).

Whats wrong with the 06, its one of the finest rounds ever developed.I have all 3 rounds and there is a difference from the 06 and 7mag to the 300win mag. The 300 has quite abit more recoil than the other two. If you are a recoil shy person you might want to consider the others. I must mention that my 06 and 7 mag are remingtons and the 300 win is a ruger. From my experience most ruger rifles seem to have a bit more recoil than remingtons, not really sure why unless its the stock.
