FYI:

Federal offers a .22-250 loaded with a 60 grain Nosler Partition in its Premium Vital-Shok line. It'd work well on deer at short to medium range and would likely shoot fine in a 1:12" barrel.

Cor-Bon offers the 53 grain Barnes TSX in its DPX Hunter line which would be perfect for the typical 1:14" twist barrels. Cor-Bon also offers the 62 grain TSX in .22-250 as well, but you'd probably need at least a 1:10" twist to stabilize it.

If you live in Ontario, Canada. It is illegal to use that caliber while deer hunting.

Actually you can. You cant use a .22 rimfire, but .22 centrefires are ok. I wouldnt do it though. .308 for me!

http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/239841.pdf

Scroll down to the firearms regs. I dont see any restrictions on centrefire firearms. .223 could also be used.

I'd contrast deer hunting with .22 centerfires to concealed carry for self defense! Would you buy a .22 for self defense? Probably not! If a thug attacked you and all you had was a .22, would it work? Probably, but given a choice, I sure wouldn't want to bet my life on it!
So, I would not buy a .22 for deer hunting, when for the same price I could buy a real deer caliber!

well i know some people that have killed lots of deer with a 22-250. This fall i saw a real nice 5x5 get shot with one. It will kill a deer just as dead as any gun,but some people like to shoot an extra 50 grains of lead. I use a 243 and it had worked great on every deer iv shot with it. I would use recommend a 243 for deer hunting, but a 22-250 will get the job done too.

In most states such as Kansas, the .243 is the minimum legal caliber

X2, In many places a 22 centerfire is illegal for deer hunting. Get a 243 instead of a 22-250.You can use it on deer anywhere in the US or Canada where rifle hunting is legal.

no to small id go at least with a 243 It would kill with a perfect shot, but in the hunting world you may not get
IF you use a premium bullet load, like a Barnes X or Nosler Partition, you will be amazed at how the 22/250 will kill deer, even bigmulies. Shot placement is all-important, but the cartridge allows that.

If you want to know how a .22 will do on deer, read the comments on killing power of the .220 Swift on wild burros in the Ackley Handbook for Shooters & Reloaders, Vol. I

I dont feel undergunned carrying my .22 for self defense.
I know first hand what they can do. My friend was shot low in the stomach from a .22lr, dropped him in his tracks, he said it was like litghtening struck him, and last year my friends nephew shot a 300lb guy with a .22 hornet in the stomach in self defense during a shootout. dropped that big guy right where he stood. I heard they had to remove about 10 ft of his intestines.
any amount of lead in the body is not good.
