savage 110 stock
 

I have a .270 Savage 110 that is a tack-driver, but it has the bulky, ugly stock that I hate. Can anyone recommend a good replacement stock? I have seen some advertised in catalogs, but I'm hoping for feedback from people who have handled them. Wood, laminate, or synthetic, it doesn't matter to me.

Does your 110 have a center-feed magazine, or is it the older staggered version?

There are a lot of stock options for you if you have the older design with the staggered magazine. If you have the center feed version, the options are much more limited, at least for the near future. Savage has this pesky problem of making small changes to their rifles every few years that make it hard for aftermarket parts makers to keep up. In this case, all of the many aftermarket stocks made for the older Savage rifles can't be used with the new magazine design, and stockmakers seem to be hesitant to re-tool for the new stock when Savage might change it again in a year or two.

I know Choate makes a Savage stocks, including the center feed variety. Also look to www.sharpshootersupply.com. They specialize in Savage parts and may be able to help you.

I have 2 boyds jrs laminates. They are nice, but not light weight. Richards microfit's may be a little straighter, but more expensive.

Thanks, it's staggered. I picked it up in the mid-90's, andI mostly hunt with my '06(s). I'm thinking of taking the .270 on my antelope hunt this fall.

If it's a staggered magazine then you have a lot of options. McMillan, H&S Precision, and Bell & Carlson are just a few that make composite stocks for the pre-center feed actions. Of those my first choice would be McMillan. A bit expensive, but very top-notch composite stocks. H&S seem to be great stocks too, from what I've seen of them. B&C stocks are cheaper, but are still far better than the Savage tupperware plastic stock you've got. For hardwood or laminate you could go with Richard's Microfit stocks (www.rifle-stocks.com), or check out www.sharpshootersupply.com. They sell inletted laminate stocks. Both Richard's Microfit and SS Supply stocks will require finishing (sanding and applying your choice of wood finishing products like oil rub, polyurethane, etc...). They may also require some minor fitting and inletting for your individual action. If you're not comfortable doing any minor fitting, most gunsmiths can do it for a nominal fee.
