Looking for info on a Remington 600,

Recently(yesterday)I did some work for an older gentleman and in payment he gave me a Rem.600 chambered in .308 win.(ya gotta love the barter system) the strange thing is that it has a short(18 inch) barrel on it.It looks like a carbine barrel and I was wondering if that was the way it came or did someone(for whatever reason)modify it.I have not fired it yet,I'll take care of that later today and find out if it's a shooter or not.I cannot imagine why someone would have the barrel cut down on a rifle.Any help or info would be appreciated.I should add that it has a small replica of a Mexican coin(I assume it's a peso)inlaid into the stock on the underneath side.

RE: Looking for info on a Remington 600,

I've already looked it up on the Remington website and it does not give barrel length just the standard info,
Introduction year-1964
Discontinued-1967
Total production-94,386
And some other basics but not what I really wanted to know like what's the twist rate, has the barrel been cut down, etc.

Can't swear to it,But I think they did make the 600 in a carbine.Seems like an old buddy of mine had one in .243

My uncle has 3 of them, and they ONLY came in carbine model, (18" or so.) The early models had a vent rib on the barrel. Theywere very handy and accurate rifles.

RE: Looking for info on a Remington 600,

I got one back in the mid 60s and still have it, it's also a .308 Win. I still use it deer hunting, but have taken deer and elk with it, all under 150 yards. I've always liked how handy it is. They did have a recall on the trigger/safety many years ago (late 60's, early 70's?). One way to tell is to look at the trigger, if it is/was gold colored it hasn't had the recall performed. I believe you can also go to the Remington web site and the recall checked by serial number.

I've alwaysreloaded for mine and it does well with 165 grain rounds. I've used a scope on it in the past but currently have a Williams receiver sight on it.

Other rifles have come and gone, but the 600 has alway been in my closet.

Yes, the Remington 600, 660, and 600 Mohawk all came with shorter, "carbine" barrels. My first rifle was a 600 Mohawk in .243, and it IS a shooter. While most people either love or hate it, I'd hang onto it were I you.

Killed my first deer with one in .308. A big doe at about 175yrds. I love that rifle! The man that owns it bought it new in the 60's and he bought it because he could get it out of the window rack of the truck without the barrel getting hung in the seatbelt on the other side. I wish he would sell it because I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
