How many rounds can a 10/22 last?
 

How many rounds can you expect a 10/22 to last? I know I've heard 10,000 rounds is a good number for most regular rifles before wearing them out. I know for the 10/22 it isn't a huge deal since they make soo many aftermarket parts and if you wear a barrel out there are plenty others you can buy. I just wondered though in stock from how many rounds can you expect it to last through without needing work? 10,000 is a lot for a regular rifle but for a 10/22 it's not that many I don't think anyway.

10,000 rounds is not a lot for a 10/22,or for most other 22 rimfire rifles,for that matter.You aren't likely to burn the throat out of a 22 rimfire like you can with a centerfire,and if you lube the action properly,it shouldn't be worn out in 10,000 rounds.

IMO, if you keep it well maintained and cleaned, 10,000 rounds is just finishing thebreak-in period.

I have so many rounds through my ruger. Tons of days where I have shot boxes of 500. And I've been doing that for fifteen years now. I've replaced a few springs in the action just this past fall. And I've replaced the magazine or clip whatever ya wanna call it. they go way before the gun will! Best and most fun gun for the price!

I doubt that you could ever wear it out in one lifetime if you take care of it properly. A .22LR burns maybe between 1 and 2 grains of powder at maybe 15K psi max (I'm guessing, but I seriously doubt it's higher than that). Throat erosion is a reality in CF rifles, particularly the very overbore magnums, because of the very high pressures (60K psi+), high flame temps which soften the steel. This causes the throat to slowly erode, just like water erodes rock. But it takes a lot of pressure and heat to do this. A .22LR is nowhere near the pressure or temp of any CF cartridge. The biggest danger is by improper cleaning methods that can damage the throat or muzzle, failure to clean and properly lube moving parts resulting in excess wear, or just plain neglect (such as storing the gun without first using a good preservative product). Take care of it and it should last several lifetimes.

If I had to guess I would say somewhere around 4 million round, then you just put another $100 barrel on it after lunch and go back to the range.

Since i don't fully understand the question I have to ask what you expect to see. Say your number of 10,000 rds. is correct...what happens on round number 10001 ? As long as the basic action housing is in good working order every internal part can be bought for cheap. With a bolt buffer and a small amount of due diligance the gun could last longer than you could afford to feed it.

I'd say 1.7 million rounds before it wears out......;)

I have a Ruger 10/22 that was produced the 2nd year of production, and its been in a rollover pickup accident which slightly tweaked the barrel, and its still going strong. I'd have no clue where to guess how many thousands of rounds have gone thru that gun, but its ALOT.

I shot well over 50,000 rounds through mine and I don't see anysigns of wearor any change in accuracy.

If I can get sponsors for ammo costs, I'll be delighted in finding out exactly how long a 10/22 will last.:D I've NEVER seen 1 plumb wore out YET!

I bet most are wore out from not cleaning orimproper cleaning, or over cleaning.

I have over 20K through mine and it shoots as good as it ever did. I boresnake it (brush removed) about every 100 or so rounds and really clean it every 1000.

i've had the same 10/22 since 73' or so. i usually keep it in my truck year round for critters here on the farm. no telling how many rounds thru it. still accurate and goes bang everytime. i'd just go shoot and not give"wearing it out" another thought.
