Realistic range for a .17 HMR

I'm thinking about getting a .17 HMR and can't find a honest answer for the effective range for one. Does anyone have a .17 HMR and whats the farthest you can take game consistantly?

Own a Marlin 917 in .17 HMR. And have killed chuck's at 200 plus yard's with it. The only problem is the slightest breeze throw's it off. and it's not the one you feel in front of you, but the one between you and the target. Remember it's a pellet gun round moving at 2500 FPS.

I've shot one out to 300 yds. Groups were getting unreasonably large, penatration power was squat.

I've never owned a .17 HMR, but with that light weight of a bullet, I really don't see it being effective on game larger than a rabbit at 100 yds. or greater.
It's powder capacity is cerainly not enough for adequate killing capacity past that range, in my opinion. 200 yd.+ kills on coyotes?? Hmmmmmmm............
