which of these calibers would make the best deer round? It will onlt be used for deer,Prob wont ever elk hunt unless win the lottery then id have a custom gun.

You are certainly splitting hairs between the three as far as performance goes, from point blank out to 350 yards or so...

I guess if I were buying a rifle strictly for deer, I'd go with the 25-06 because it kicks a little less than the other two and at extreme ranges it shoots a little flatter...

I just bought a 270 strictly for deer, but the 25-06 is very interesting to me for a deer gun as well.

100 grain bullets work fine on deer in the 25-06...

If you use 115-120 grain bullets in the 25-06, ballistics basically match 270/130 grain ballistics...

The 100 grainers in the 25-06 will shoot slightly flatter and kick slightly less than the 270/130, but as I said before, you are splitting hairs here..

Before someone jumps on me, I am aware that there are 100 grain bullets available for .270 also, BUT most of them are are designed for varmint hunting, whereas 100 grain .257 bullets are designed for deer sized game...

30-06 all the way.

More types of ammo available. The ammo is less expensive. You can get 30-06 ammo anywhere.

270 is a close second.

25-06 deserves honorable mention, but the other two cartridges are better cartridges. However the factory ammo for 25-06is way too expensive. Operating cost of a rifle for the rest of your life is important. If you want to practice with your rifle then the 30-06 will cost less money, it is that simple.

You will hear a few guys tell you that dead is dead, and that the 25-06 will kill deer dead. And it will, no doubt. However we have shot a lot of deer with all 3 of the above cartridges, and if planting the deer in their tracks is important to you, then the 30-06 is king of the 3 you mentioned.

Some hunters will complain about the recoil of a 30-06. And it will recoil a bit more. However unless you have a physical problem then the 30-06 recoil is easily manageable. And if you are recoil shy then I would go with a lighter cartridge than what you listed. There is not a lot of difference between those 3.

The bottom line is the difference between these cartridges is cost of operation. Why would you pay more?? Tom.

For deer only pick the one in stock when you go to buy. Deer will never be able to tell the difference.

25-06, 270 then 30-06 in that order of preference. Odd thing is I have all 3 calibers and bought them in reverse order....go figure. I bought my M77-30-06 more than 25 years ago only to realize later on that it is too much gun for whitetails. Due to the caliber versatility I do not regret it as I also hunt bear and moose. Can't go wrong with 100-120 gr bullets in the 25-06 and 130gr in the .270.
