Remington 1100 Question
 

My father left me his 1100 Remington. It is a 12 gauge, 2-3/4", 30" barrel with full choke. No choke tubes. The shotgun has not been shot for over 20 years. The shotgun has fantastic wood on it, and is in excellent shape.

I want to start hunting with it.

I was going to buy a new barrel(preferably a good used one) with choke tubes. Can I put a 3" barrel on the shotgun?? Or do I need to keep it 2-3/4"??

I am going to take it to a gunsmith and have it taken apart and completely cleaned before I shoot it. However I really wanted a 3" shotgun. Maybe I will leave it in the safe and not hunt or shoot it. But I would like to hunt with it since it was my dad's.

Anybody got a good used barrel for sale?? Tom.

Pretty sure you will be limited to the 2 3/4" shells.If I am not mistaken the ejection port is not long enough for the 3" to clear.

Yep, you can't shoot 3 inch mags in a 2 3/4 receiver...

I've owned an 1100 since the mid 70s, with their smooth slug barrel...I need to buy a replacement barrel as well...There's nothing wrong with a 2 3/4 chamber, plenty of hunting you can still do with it...

What are you planning to hunt with it???

Remmington has made a number of model 1100 and you will need to make sure yours can shoot the 3 inch shells. I own the 1100 magnum and can shoot all the 3 inch shells I want to. i also have another barrel so I can shoot 2 3/4 inch shells with out any jam ups.
Iam guessing you can with the 30 inch barrel but while you are getting it cleaned have it checked out to be sure as well as safe when shooting it. Also keep in mind that a while back ( quite a few years ago) Remmington had a recall on some barrels of the model 1100. It was because some had split apart so you would want to make sure yours is made to handle the 3 inch shells. Good Luck with it.

Your 1100must have the magnum reciever to safely use 3" shotshells. 870s used to be marked with an "M" as part of the serial number if they were "magnum" receivers, not sure if that practice is still current or if itcarried over to the 1100, but it's likely that it did.

If the barrel that's on the shotgun is it's original barrel, chances are it is NOT a magnum receiver and should NOT be used with 3" shotshells.

As has been stated previously, there's still a lot of hunting one can do with a 2-3/4" chamber. The onlyspecies I've used 3" foris goose, preferring 2-3/4" for everything else (including turkey).

Go to the remington site. You can purchase a steel shot barrel that was made to shoot 3" steel shells out of a standard receiver. They come with a full choke, but you can purchase additional choke tubes. They also have them in Cabelas, and you can read the explanation. On a standard receiver, the steel shot barrel can shoot heavy 2 3/4" and steel 3". Out of a magnum receiver, you can shoot 3" steel or 3" lead.

i got an 1100 3" chamber. I shoot 2 3/4" and 3" no problem.

That's a new one on me.Guess you learn something new everyday.If I had known I'd still have some shotguns I sold off years ago.....:D

Well, that'sa new one, but it's exactly what the remington.com website says. However, being limited to ONLY steel 3" shotshells doesn't exactly make me want to do cartwheels. That cries "geese only". And for over $250?

Nonetheless, if geese are what's for dinner, one of these barrels is absolutely an option I wasn't aware of previously.

This from the Remington website on the steel shot barrels.

‡NOTE: Model 1100 Steel Shot Barrels are designed for use with 2-3/4" or 3" Magnum steel or lead shot shells when used on Magnum receivers and 2-3/4" or 3" Magnum steel or 2-3/4" lead shotshells when used on non-Magnum receivers.

I'm not convinced that a non magnum receiver will have the clearance to eject the 3" shell even though the barrel itself is designed for up to a 3" shell. I know of several pump shotguns with a 2.75" receiver that can be fitted with a 3" capable barrel but are still limited to being allowed to shoot 2.75" shells.
Either way I would call Remington to make sure.
