You won't be able to rechamber the barrel you have. You can however pick up a 243 barrel from Midway that is fully chambered. You'll need the barrel, barrel nut wrench, barrel vise, head space gauges and an action wrench. You will also need to change the bolt head and most likely the magazine box and follower. By the time all is said and done it is cheaper to buy a gun chambered for the 243.

He won't have to change the bolt head as both the cartridges have exactly same size rim diameter. He can get 1 of the spacers for magazine box (or box & follower) such as Savage has been doing for years. If you're dead set on another caliber/cartridge, trading would make the most sense cost wise. if determined to replace barrel on your existing action, it would make MUCH MORE sense to have a qualified gunsmith do it.

I agree,a good policy all around - "When in doubt, buy another gun". Really, how can you go wrong?

Changing a barrel on a Savage/Stevens boltrifle takes all of ten minutes if you have the tools and any mechanical ability. Not so long ago Savage didn't make a short action, they used the long action for all rounds. My 22-250 is a long action. You will need a mag box filler, your new barrel, a no-go guage for .243/.308, a barrel nut wrench and a large vise with wooden blocks.
Depending on what barrel you bought it can be done for somewhere between $150 and $500.

I took a savage long action (30-06) and put a 338 fed on it. No feeding problems and like it was said, took all of 10 minutes (after the wait for the parts)

I'm no expert, but I wonder about changing a barrel on a standard rifle as you would a single-shotT/C Encore or Pro-Hunter. Of course it can be done, but for the cost of a Stevens, why bother. Just getting another gun makes more sense to me.

Yes and its far easier than some would have you believe. Obviously chambering of similar configuration require less to convert back and forth. (.243 to .260 to 7-08 etc.)

Pre threaded and fully chambered barrels can be had from Shilen, Sharpshooter Supply, Midway, Brownells.......
