You know I just thought about this, if you are right handed you can get a Stevens. Made off of the Savage 110 action, it is accurate without any of the niceties.

You get what you pay for, good luck.
And you can get a nice XL-7 or a Mossberg ATR new for around $300. They both offer "accu trigger style" adjustable triggers (it's new on the Mossberg for 09') and I can vouch for the ATR being a great shooter and darn accurate. These "budget" guns will serve most of us just fine for hunting and ocasional rec shooting. Sometimes there not the prettiest, neither are the expensive synthetic stock rifles, but they work. I am not sure what a Stevens cost new, but they have a loyal following also.

Thanks for all the helpful replies so far. I saw a Savage 111 with scope advertised locally for $325, and I may call and see if I can make a bargain.

I do not quite get the folks that scoff at trying to buy a basic bargainhunting rifle. From all I have read, from discussing it with my neighbor, and from my experience this season (I borrowed my neighbor's 30 06 and took a doe), most shots at deer here on the east coast are from 100 yards or less. It seems to me that you do not need a super accurate rifle or a top quality scopeto make a good killing shot from 100 yards (the deer I took was a 40 yard shot).

I think what they're trying to do is steer you toward a rifle/setup that you'll be happy with the rest of your life without feeling the need to upgrade later. Having said that, the Marlin XL-7 and Savage 110 are both good rifles for the money. I personally bought a Marlin XL-7 for gift to a buddy, and liked it so well, bought another 1 for myself as a beater/loaner rifle.

You certainly don't require an expensive gun,but it is nice to get the best gun you can in your price range.A Stevens or Savage both offer great value for the price. As far as scopes go,a scope that fails can easily cause a miss at less than 100 yards.

Contrary to what some people are saying, the 111 Savage is an inexpensive rifle but very dependable and very accurate. The scope isn't all that great, but it works. I replaced mine with a Burris. I am totally amazed as to why a lot of people think if you don't pay 1000.00 plus for a rifle, it's junk.
