Mauser GEW 98 action.
I had a chance to look at a GEW 98 today that was made in 1917. Unfortunately someone had " sporterized" it but really did a hack job. They cut down the stock and took off the handguard. For some reason they also curled the trigger. Made me sick. Since the gun has no collector' s value, I was wondering if the action is suitable for building on? What I mean is does anyone know if this is the same as a K98 action as far as strength and dimensions?

I don' t believe there are any differences in the actions. The are the same size wise and can' t see why the Gew would be any weaker.

Whoa! Hold on there! Has the barrel been cut on too? And is the bore in good shape? If it' s ok, I might do some trading there with you. I' m looking for one that I can restore properly.

I turned one into a .25-06 and no problems at all

I still haven' t heard back from the guy who owns it as to whether he wants to part with it or not. The barrel hasn' t been cut down but the bore is very worn.

Frizzler, sounds too bad then, unless and this may seem odd but some older mauser 98' s had lapped bores which made the rifling look worn. Of course it could be just plain wore out too. Oh well I' ll just keep a looking.
