NorthJeff - I think the .270 WSM is one of the best rounds to come along in quite a while. They key is that it has the word " Magnum" in the name, but it really isn' t a big, overly-powerful, shoulder-bruising cartridge that causes people to flinch. From this standpoint, all the WSMs and SAUMs are about the best thing the shooting/hunting industry has done for both hunters and game in the last 10 years (with the exception of offering the .260 Rem, .338-06 and now the 6.5x.284).

Your last post more clearly defines what kind of " round" you are looking for. The " best round for White-tailed deer" was not (in my opinion and some of the others who posted above) a very good way to pose the question.

" What is the best club for golfing?" If you could only take one club out on the golf course what would it be? If I was going to a LONG DRIVE competition I would take a driver and if I was going to a putting competition I would take a putter but to play a regular round I need them both and a couple in between.

When I am hunting deer in the wide open spaces where shots are usually on the long side and I usually have some time to settle in and take a carefully aimed shot, I take my bolt action model 70 Win. in .264 win. mag. with a 3 to 9 scope. (my long driver) When I am hunting deer in thickly forested country, where other bigger game may be on the adgenda as well and shots will be close and maybe hurried, I take my Rem. 7600 pump in .35 whelen with a 2 to 7 scope.

I' d say 7mm-08.

The 25-06 is one of the best and the 257stw may be the ultimate cartridge for deer but I am very content with the 7mmstw even though it is a little overkill even for our large bodied canadian deer.

My current favorite is the 7mm-08.Accurate,light weight,low recoil,and deadly on our northern Bucks.

I have used a number and it is really hard to tell someone else what is the best for them. I agree the 25-06 is a good deer gun, as is the 270 win, 308 and so on. My personal favorite right now is the 7 mm rem mag, plenty of power, flat and tolerable recoil make it an excellent all arounder for my area & mio:D

for me , it would have to be my .270 win. , or my .35 whelen , or any .35 caliber :D:D

if your talking about others , even small framed men , women , and youths ( children ) , i' de have to say the .260 rem. , a good 6.5 cal. is hard to beat on game and it offers light recoil , and a compact light rifle for smaller frame shooters :D just my 2 cents worth :D:D:D:D

The 30-06 is a better deer gun than all the rest under more varied conditions, second best is the 308.
