270 WSM or 270 Win?

Hello I have had a 270 Win in a Browning A Bolt Stalker. I am going to be giving it to my nephew and will be buying a new gun. I am thinkig about getting the 270 WSM but I have heard that there might be some problems with how smoothly the cartridge feeds into the chamber. Anyone have one and do they have any problems with it. Also I have read it has about 2 pounds more recoil than the 270 Win is this noticable? Also what do you think about the Winchester ammo for it.
Thanks for any info.

Raymond,

I' ve also read about feeding problems with some of the WSM' s, but I owned two (sold one) 300 WSM and I haven' t had any problems getting them to feed. Shot a moose with one last year, and my new 300 WSM with factory 180 fail safe ammo is so accurate I don' t even plan on reloading for it.

I got the Browning Stalker in 270 WSM a few weeks ago and so far love it.The factory loads are out doing my reloads at the moment but trying to work out different loads if I can get the weather to cooperate.Order a SVL recoild pad but haven' t gotten it yet.

Feeding problems are pretty much non-existant now, and my WSM savage feeds perfect fast or slow.I like the one inch shorter, slightly faster cycling, more rigid short action, and the 1/4 lb less weight myself and would pick the 270WSM.It will be around a long time and like the 300WSM has staying power and great ballistics. It has a slight advantage over the long action 270 even when compared against light magnum and high energy loadings, ballistic wise.Recoil is not bad and with a recoil pad can be tolerated by most shooters.A 22" barrel will offer good ballistics but they seem to come into there own with the 23-24" tubes. The 270WSM is probably the best of the entire short magnum field and will have more and more factory loads become available as time goes by,Remington is loading factory ammo for the 270WSM already.Right now their are 130gr ballistic silvertips,140gr fail safes,150gr ballistic silvertips,150gr power points, and 130gr premier core lokts available.Enjoy which ever you choose.

I have a Browning A-Bolt Classic Hunter in 270WSM. In my trips to the range I haven' t experienced any feeding problems. Its a nice gun, and a nice round. The recoil is not bad. I use a Past padm more out of habit I imagine. My buddy has the same rifle and doesn' t bother with a recoil pad.

Before you make your purchase check out the places you shop for ammo availability. That was the most frustrating part for me, chasing down ammo. I' ve stocked up for now, so that problem is solved.

I don,t think the slight difference in performance of the two rounds is worth the extra money for ammo and searching for ammo. I don,t think any big game would notice the difference.

I can' t say I' ve found any problems in finding ammo for my WSM.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hey Woodseye I thought only Browning and Winchester were making rifles in WSM. Also are you sure about Remington making ammo for it as I have checked their website and have not seen it. I used Remington Ballistic tips in my 270 Win. But I was thinking about going with the Hornady SSTs until I started thinking about getting the 270 WSM. Still can not make up my mind.

Raymond,

I picked up a Savage 16BSS. Beautiful gun! Brown laminate stock, and stainless barrel. It' s at the gunsmith right now being " bead blasted" to dull the finish, and the trigger will be worked on a little as well to get it into the 4# range, with no travel. My main purpose for the .270WSM was a 300 yard, hold dead-on round, with at least 20% kick less than the .300WSM(20% was just an arbitrary# I thought would at least be noticable compared to the .300WSM I shot and thought it kicked a bit much for my wimpy frame).

Great looking rifle.

Raymond,at last count there was 8 gun makers chambering for different WSM cartridges.I see where Ruger just announced chamberings for the 270WSM.Yes I have a Savage and ammo is not hard to find even up in the boonies of Maine [:o]The local Wally World sells 270 and 300WSM ammo for $19 a box.Remington not only makes the Core Lokt but has done several runs of scirroco loadings also.Look for federal to get on this cartridge also as the sales and popularity has been climbing rapidly.I will give you a link to a short mag site that has all the scoop on gun availability and ammo availability as well as most other questions answered.

Thanks woodseye for that link. It seems I have to get caught up on all this info. I called Hornady a few weeks ago and asked them if they would be making ammo for the WSM but they said ( They did not think so) But I think they will change their mind later. I am about 75% leaning toward the WSM and the rifle is no more than a regular 270. The only thing is I will not be able to borrow any ammo from my nephew [8D]

I' m with JamesB.

I just bought a Synthetic Stalker in .270Win. I considered the WSM, but after finding and pricing ammo, I decided on the .270Win pretty quickly. If you reload, then get whatever you want. But for someone like me who only hunts whitetails and the occasional mule deer, no need for the hassle of owning a WSM.

.270 is more than enough gun for the hunting that I do. I don' t think that a deer is going to care that the bullet that kills him is going 200fps fater out of a .270WSM.

RE: 270 WSM or 270 Win?

If it were me, I would get the 270 WSM. The balistics are better, and lets face it, sometimes it' s just plain fun to get something new and cutting edge. As far as factory ammo is concerned, I wouldn' t worry. With the popularity of the short mags what they are today, there are only going to be more and more bullet types and weights offered.

RE: 270 WSM or 270 Win?

I was thinking of getting a 270 wsm and changed my mined. I have a Browning A-Bolt in a 270 win. A very accurate rifle. What changed my mine was looking at reloading manuals and ballistic charts and books on different cartridges. It seems that so many are under loaded.etc 270win is one of them.If you reload, you can almost match the 270 wsm factory loads.

I havent shot my m70 yet, but today i picked up a box of 130gr Bts at walmart and came home and loaded the gun several times, each shell fed perfectly. ugh, if only i could take it to the range tommarow [X(]

RE: 270 WSM or 270 Win?

I am sure I am in the minority but I have no desire to ever own a WSM.. I honestly don' t see the point. The trajectory and energy is a little better but were not shooting at tanks. Deer can be killed with a 270 win just as easily. I think WSM were just a way to create a new market and make more money!! Which is fine, bit I am not contributing to it. The recoil will be higher in the WSM, ammo costs more andI dont see the point of a bullet that shoots a inch or 2 faltter at 400 yards or whatever it is. Just my opinion, yours is what counts
