1940 winchester model 12 12 gauge ammo question?

i have a 1940 era Winchester model 12 12 gauge chambered for 2 3/4 inch rounds, and the barrel is full choked. im going to take up turkey hunting this year so can i use turkey loads in this gun even though it is so old? if so what is good ammo for it?

thanks

As long as you use lead shot you will be fine...This includes buffered, copper plated lead turkey loads.. Federal Premium or Win XX turkey loads would be good choices...

Some of the non-toxic shot, such as bismuth, can be used also , but the lead loads will be cheaper, and will kill turkeys just as well as they did years ago, back when lead shot was the ONLY option...

Avoid steel shot as well as some of the harder non toxics...

I've shot a lot of copper plated lead turkey loads through, and killed quite a few turkeys with,my old Win. Mod 97, which according to the serial number, was made sometime around 1911. It digested them without a hiccup and patterned pretty well to boot. As long as you use lead loads, your young whipper-snapper 1940 Mod. 12 won't have a problem either.

Yes. Modern shotshells are loaded to the same pressures as those loaded in 1940. But use 2.75" shells only, of course.

A question if I may. My brother has a same era Model 12. Will a 1300 rifled slug barrel fit a M 12 and be safe?

Hunt: NO. A Model 1300 slug barrel will not fit a Mod. 12. Only Model 12 barrels can be interchanged with other Model 12's of the same gauge.
