RE: What groupings do you shoot?
I don' t think that that is an unreasonable prediction at all. You didn' t say what arm it is chambered in, and that makes an awful lot of difference, but to get a 7mm mag of almost any variety to shoot 1MOA out to a quarter mile isn' t asking a terrible amount.
I shoot a Ruger Mark II M-77 standard .30-06 with handloaded 150gr varminter boattails with a very cheap Tasco High country(their top of the line model when I bought it) 4-16X35mm glass over Ruger' s rings. I get groups on average in warm weather of .5MOA at 100-350yrds, so my flight is VERY regular, especially for a nearly stock arm. At 400yrds, my flight starts to open up a bit, shifting to an average of .8MOA, 1.2MOA at 600yrds and I' m up to 2MOA at 800yrds, but I don' t know that I' d ever shoot that far at anything anyway, I' m sure this rapid decay is due to extreme loss of velocity and bullet stability (any infinitescimle wobble has had a LONG time to work at that distance). |
RE: What groupings do you shoot?
My (30.06) will print 3/4" groups at 100yds with my handloads and also hold tight groups at long ranges as long as i do my part. The accuracy it shot with factory ammo was also acceptable when i was breaking it in but not as good as with the handloads.

RE: What groupings do you shoot?
Nomercy...I shoot a HVA Carl Gustaf Custom Rifle and I' m using Federal Premiuim 165gr. Boat tails. I liked the performance of these bullets with my old scope but it was only a 4X. I couldn' t get real great groups at 200 before due to the scope power but now I' m not too sure what to expect with this new scope. I' m getting a pretty good idea now with all the good responses. I think reloads seem to be the key, but I don' t have any reloading equipment and I don' t shoot this rifle a whole lot other than at big game. I' m going to stick with the factory ammo and try a few different types.

browning medallion 30-06sprg 50yds 1.5" 100yds. 1.080"
savage 10FCM " scout" 308win 50yds1.5" 100yds .275" - 1" F.N. mauser 35whelen 50yds 2" 100yds 2" browning BAR 30-06sprg 50yds 1" 100yds 2" - 2.5" never really tried them out past 100yds due to my average shots are under 100yds. but when i did shoot my medallion they where in a group about the size of a pie plate. i wish could get groups like others out at 200yds. but practice would help. as long as i feel comfortable with the gun then i will take it hunting. i have some other guns that just go everywhere but where i want them to go ( 450marlin was one of them ) |
RE: What groupings do you shoot?
Quilly,
How are two of your rifles shooting better groups at 50 yards than they do 100? |
RE: What groupings do you shoot?
I think you have us all wondering about that Quilly.

RE: What groupings do you shoot?
i thought it would be easier to have them group better at 50yds than 100yds? but anyhoo . i sight my rifles in at 50yds.
30-06sprg using sierra gamekings. the 308win 150gr. nosler BT' s. is it supposed to be harder to get better groups at 100yds? most of my practicing is at 50yds not 100yds. maybe that has something to do with it? |
RE: What groupings do you shoot?
Since those rifles get more accurate at longer distance, you need to try them at 200 yards. That should get your groups down to 1/2" or so!;)

RE: What groupings do you shoot?
diyj98..
i have tried maybe once or twice but i don' t know if i should hold a bit high or dead on when sighting in at 50yds. plus i don' t use a spotting scope to see where my shots go untill i get done. last time i did do it my 30-06sprg medallion shot about 4.5" groups at 200yds ( also did not fine tune it in due to my shots are well under 100yds. |
