Im a big fan of the 308winny but the tikka comes in long action only, if Im not mistaken, therefore, I would go w/ a long action cartridge like the 30-06. 25-06 would be a good deer/varmint cal too.

Don’t put a 308 in a Tikka if you are set on a Tikka go with a 25-06 or a 270 or 30-06.

I wouldn't say it was the best, but the 308 works pretty good in my tikka with light or heavy bullets. This is a 300 yd target.

When I was in this position I bought a 25-06! No regrets! To answer the original question a 308 does the trick of being all around pretty good too!

I like my 308, but as far as "best all around" for the uses that have been described, I would go with my 6.5x55 Swede. I can shoot 85 gr to 160 gr bullets, and it is very mild recoiling.

Bronko why do you like the .243 and 7mm 08 but hate the 308? I mean to each his own but the .308 is the parent cartridge to both the .243 and the 7mm 08...they have same case just one is .24 caliber, one .284 and one is .30. No big deal, it just seems odd to love two from the same family and hate the other. Just wondering

I'm thinking of buying a Tikka 308. I've never shot a 308 but I want something I can hunt Yotes with with its not deer season but hunt deer with also. I know ammo is very easy to come by. Whats all of your thoughts?
New bullets have helped the .308 to be a superb cartridge.....

Barnes TTSX 130 grain at 3,200 FPS makes the .308 a wonderful choice for long range deer/pronghorns and if one chooses a little creative reloading he can push a 180 Accubond to 2,740 FPS for elk hunting.....

It certainly will handle coyotes as well.......

If one must cover all that ground with one rifle then the .308 will do it.....that said I think a .260 Rem or a 7mm-08 will cover the ground as well.....and a bit better IMO

personally I would like two rifles.....a .223 and a .30-06.....

Or better yet, 6.5x55;)

I'd say the .30-06 is the best all around cartridge. Even though I love my Savage .308 and its legendary accuracy, the .30-06 can do more.

You can tone down a .30-06 where it's recoil is lighter than a .308 - heck, almost the recoil of a .30-30!! Or you can load it up heavy, and have the shoulder busting recoil of .338 Winchester Magnum!

But anyway, I chose my .308 because it a NATO cartridge, ammo and brass are everywhere, it can take game up to a moose with proper bullet placement, and well... My Savage .308 just felt right to me and said, "Buy me and take me home". ;)
