7mm-08.
I purchased a Browining A-Bolt Micro Hunter in 7mm-08. I am extremely happy with this rifle. I got into loading my own bullets a couple of years back and have had good success with this rifle. It is compact, light, and shoots well. I also like the detachable magazine.

Since WHEN is an 7mm08 a cannon and heavy recoiler??? Have you ever even shot a 7mm08? I've shot AND used both and prefer the 7mm08. If he's SURE he'll NEVER decide to hunt elk, then perhaps the .243may be better-with heavy eye on varmits. But the 7mm08 IS better on deer than the .243 is-based on 1sthand experience and that of others I actually watched shot.

YOU DON'T NEED A CANNON TO KILL A DEER
My choice is the .243 They will kill anything up to but NOT INCLUDING AN ELK
I have taken many deer with my model 70 light weight.
SHOT PLACE-MENTIS MORE IMPORTANT THAN CALIBER!
LONG RANGE AND LESS RECOIL ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO ME!

RE: Favorite .243 or 7mm-08 Rifle
well these past couple of weeks I got to see first hand what the 7-08 will do. Nothing better than the .243. Just dont see it being MUCH better.
yesterday 3 deer fell. 25-06, 7-08 and a .243 were used. the only one that fell in its tracks was the one shot with the .243. all vital hits, What does this prove , probably nothing, but it shows the 7-08 isnt MUCH better. The one hit with the 25-06 actuall showed more damage though.
I say pick the one you want. I been shooting the .243 for many years, but I sold mine a few weeks back. Iwas contemplating getting the 7-08 but after seeing what it does which is nothing better than the .243 I might get another .243 but the 25-06 is not out of the question, the 7-08 is, shells are just to hard to find for it.

Thank goodness for all the different cartridges!!! What would we have to argue about if we didn't have so many different cartridges. If I had to choose between the two I would choose the 7-08. However I would choose the daddy(308) over both of them. But then I prefer the 30 caliber.
As far as the rifle is concerned. It depends on how you hunt and how much you have to spend. If I were you I would buy the best I could afford. Remember if you buy the right one the first time, you may never need to buy another(Oh my what did I just say). Tom.

i have a 1976 year rem 700 bdl in 243. it is very accurate with plain old 100gr corelokts as well ashandloaded 100gr partitions. imo, a wonderful round for deer. minimum recoil with awide selection of bullets and factory ammo.never owned a 7/08, nor do i know anyone who has one. but i am sure that round would perform as well.

The 7mm08 is MUCH better choice than .243.
The 7mm08 is MUCH better choice than .243.
Not only does the 7mm08 have the capability to cleanly kill deer, elk, black bear,as well as pronghorn antelope, but is also almost always finely accurate and not much more recoil at all. In fact, the 7mm08 with 120-140 ge bullets recoil so mildly,I started my kids out on them at 10 and 12 years old,and they both killed deer the very 1st year they hunted with 7mm08s.
The 7mm08 will kill any deer ever to walk the earth-and at any reasonable range too. Yes,I realize the .243 is a fine cartridge, but it's not near as good as the 7mm08. With the 7mm08,you can use controlled expansion bullets on elk too-not so for the .243-at least not ethnically (IMO). The 7mm08 is arguably the BEST whitetail cartridge of all time!
Folks should give advice/recommendations/opinions based on the question that was asked, not on some hypothetical that ignores the intended uses and adds a bunch of others. The man asked about rifles in .243 and 7mm-08 for deer and varmints. He didn't ask about Weatherby Magnums, or .338's, or .17's, or what works better on elk.
For the uses described in the original post, the .243 is perfect. My son shoots a Model 7 Youth, and I've got a Model 700 ADL. I haven't had a deer yet that needed more than one shot.... Both rifles are very accurate. The Model 7 is really sweet if you hunt from a blind or if you have to carry it a long way. Very compact package.

RE: Favorite .243 Caliber Rifle
Ok,I'll take that butt chewing for misinterpeting the post BUT if you HONESTLY THINK the 7mm08 actually kicks 50% more than the .243 with same size case and amount of powder-you need to go back and read more because you OBVIOUSLY havn't fired them side by side-it's an phtical impossibility for the 7mm08 with 140 gr bullet to kick 50% more than a .243 with the usual 100 gr bullet so go back to the book or wherever YOU got THAT misinformation and check again. ESPECIALLY since you made a personal agenda of correcting "people".

Not based on what he plans to use it for...
The 7mm-08 is a fairly mild kicker, but, it still has about 50% more than the .243...
He said deer and varmints. NOT deer, elk, black bear, etc...
