My slug gun for 10 years was a Moss 500 rifled 12 ga, red dot mounted to the top of receiver.
The 8 pound + trigger was like pulling a tooth, took it to a gun smith and he said moss shot gun triggers can not be "done", they are not like a "rifle" trigger.
Search high and low and never found ANY info on "doing" moss shot gun triggers.

Switched to Rem and had a 2.5# jewel trigger dropped in.

Rem 870, cant barrel, jewel trigger would be a good 100 yard gun.

Respectfully, that "gunsmith" you went to that said that was either a moron, didn't want to do it,or didn't really know what he was doing. I've reworked MANY mossberg triggers over the years=same as remingtons and others.

Hey JCchartboy- I'm thinking about buying the savage 210 slugwarrior, or getting Tar-hunt to modify a rem.870.

what ammo do you shoot in your 210 to get those 1.9-1.8" groups at 100yds that you put in that photo?

I've been scouting a massive buck, and just want an accurate slug gun (I can't talk myself into the $2000+ price tag of the tar-hunt)

I'm not surprised the Hornadys don't group all that great with your 500. My gun hated them. It prefers slugs in the 1350-1550 fps range. Try something like Winchester Super X 3" Sabot or Brenneke KO (the true sabot version, not the attached wad one) and I'll bet you'll see smaller groups. Be sure to tighten the barrel nut firmly, and don't rest gun on the forearm for sighting in, rest it on the receiver.

I have a Marlin 512 and though it is not much to look at, it is a great 100-125 yard deer killer. That's enough range for me and I shoot the "cheaper" sabots. The Slug Warrior is a great gun but can be pricey. Another bolt action is the Mossberg 695 (I think). The Marlin and Mossberg are not made these days, so you'll have to find one used, which can be done. They are making the Slug Warrior now.

You may want to consider a Mossberg 695 bolt slug gun. I'm not sure if they are still being made but there are plenty to be found used. It's a dedicated bolt action slug gun and very accurate. I use my H&R when hunting from a stand but when I'm stalking with a gun I grab the Mossberg because it's lighter and carries three rounds for quick follow up shots.

A good used one could be had for around three bills.

Here's one just like the one I have (without the silly see through rings) for $225.00
