AR-15 Issue
 

I have a Bushmaster AR-15 and it is quickly becoming my favorite gun. I noticed, however, that when I extract a round from the chamber with out fireing it, it willhave a small dimple on the primer from the firing pin. This makes me a little nervous about the gun firing unintendedly. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do about it.

Do you reload for it? If so use CCI #400 I beleive is what i use because they have a harder cup. Just a thought for you.

Are you using winchester primers now? Thats what I was using and I also noticed a dimple. I really don't think it is enough to cause it to fire but it makes you wonder.

I'm using CCI Primers but I'm not sure what number they are. I just remember that they are SR Primers. I'm going to check them out. Now that I think about it does it with some store bought rounds a friend of mine gave me the other day.

Not really a big deal. The firing pin moves freely in the bolt assembly and every time the bolt closes the pin will slide forward and tap the primer. There have been problems of people using handgun primers that caused them to go off. Stick with the CCI primers that you are using and you will be fine.

Its completely normal. Most military semi-autos have free floating firing pins such as in the AR-15, M1 Garand, M14, SKS, etc.At least the first three on the list cannot fire out of battery so long as everything is in spec- the firing pin is held captive until the bolt locks and the inertia of the firing pin then moves forward and dimples the primer.

CCI makes milspec primers, personally I think they are overkill. I've shot thousands of handloads trough the M1 Garand with the 'soft' Federal 210 primers (yes they dimple every time) and I shoot remington 7 1/2s and winchester WSRs throught the AR15- never had one go off from the pin's inertia. Most important is that the primers get seated below flush to avoid slamfiring.

I thought all the primers dimpled. Regardless, that is a "feature" of the AR15.
