Need helping picking out caliber.
I have a T/C Prohunter I want to get a barrel for that I can hunt coyotes with. I've been using my 270 but since i've gotten into it I want something smaller or better suited for yotes. I'm torn between a 22-250,243,25-06,or a 308. I would love to hear from anyone. I dont want to make a bad choice and new to this and don't know alot of people who do it.

I use a .243 and love it. I have never taken a shot at a coyote farther than 200 yards with it, and never farther than 300 at deer. Still it worked everytime. I have several friends from Monatana who swear by their 25-06's though. Personally I do not think you could go wrong with either one.

I don't specifically hunt yotes (even though I would shoot one while deer hunting), but I personally can't think of a better caliber than a 22-250.....

If you want it specifically for yotes then either a .223 or 22-250.
If shots are intended to be under 300 yards then go with the .223. If over 300 yards then go with the 22-250. Keep in mind that you canshoot a lot more inexpensively with the .223 than you can with the 22-250. |

I'd go with the .243.Not a whole lot of difference between the 25-06 and your .270.The .22's are nice but the 243 will have them for lunch as distance increases due to it's superior wind bucking ability. How'd dat 308 get in this one:)?

You really did not describe the distance you would like to shoot. And you did not specify if pelt damage is a concern?? Or not?? And do you reload??
For an Encore it would be pretty difficult to beat the 223 Remington cartridge for shots out to 300 yards. Bullet selection is fantastic, so you can go for killing power, or low pelt damage. And factory ammo is probably the best priced of any of the factory cartridges. Personally before I would pay the price for a Pro Hunter barrel I would look at an MGM barrel, or even a BullBerry or Eabco. Normally they have 223 barrels in stock. And you can get a custom barrel for very little more money. And they do shoot. Tom. |
RE: Need helping picking out caliber.
I started Yote hunting 3 years ago. I went out and bought me a Kimber 84M Longmaster VT (.22-250) topped with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14X44mm. The rifle was a beauty and very accurate. However, I quickly got tired of carrying around a 10lb rifle and more importantly, I wanted something I could confidently shoot a deer (200+ yards) with when yote hunting in the fall. I sold my beautiful Kimber and bought a 6lb Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in .243 and kept the Zeiss scope for it. Wow - this is a great set-up. I can shoot .55gr ballistic tips at over 4,000 fps or 100gr at larger game. I can carry it all day and never get tired.
I'd recommend the .243, which can do everything the .22-250 can and more. |
