Problems Sighting In with Open Sights
 

Well I headed up the mountain and brought the good ole 30-30 along becuase the gun is a family treasure I guess you could say...was my Grandfathers and then my Fathers and will be Mine. I absolutely love the look of the gun and want to get a kill with it becuase It would be a very cool sentimentle thing to do but I had a little bit of a problem problem sighting it in. I took my first shot at approximately 100 yards and was a few FEET high! Saw the dirt fligh up and so I moved the rear sight as low as it would go. Shot again....Lower but still probably 2 feet high....thinkin I moved the sight the wrong direction and so I moved it all the way in the other direction....resulting In a super high shot. So my question is how can I get my gun to shoot lower even if the sight is bottomed out? I really want to hunt with the gun but I really do need to get it to shoot lower....so I was just wandering if yall could help me??

Try a different brand of ammo. If you're hitting high, the rear sight needs to move downward. You could also try a taller front sight.

Well the front sight Is a raised one so its pretty high and the back is all the way down...thats why Im confused...

I was shooting 150 Grain Rem. Core Lokts

You'll either have to change ammo or change sights. Try 170 gr. bullets. That was the preferred load for years.

I had the same priblem with my 30-30 years ago. I back the rear sights down all the way and then shot with only half a bead on the front sight. I don't mean filing it down I just mean only putting half the bead in the sight picture.

Front has to go up, back has to go down. Pretty much your choices, or aim low.

What gun is this? You may be able to get new sights if it is a Marlin. Get a dial caliper and call customer service so you can explain the issue and give them the dimensions of your sights. They may be able to figure out just how much taller your front sight should be.

Other than that, I guess you'd need to alter your sight picture. The six O'clock hold may work. If the gun has been owned and used successfully by others, I'm thinking the issue may be with the way you are using the sights. Hard to say though.

Ok well its a Winchester Model 94 thats pretty old and it "appears" that the fron sight is removable but I will look to see if I can find anyone that sells a taller front sight...

Yes, the blade should be in a dovetail slot, and yes you can get taller ones.
