sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
I saw something I can' t believe. My buddy just got a FN A1 Tactical 308. real nice gun for 1360dollars. McMillian stock, heavy chrome lined barrel, winchester 70 action. Well, we took to the range with 5 different types of ammo. FN guanteeed less than .75" groups at 100 yards with Fed Match or Black hills 168gr 308win ammo. None of that ammo could we get ahold of this weekend, but had the following
Federal Nosler Bullistic Tips 165gr Federal Sierra Gamekings Boatails 165gr Remington Match 168gr Remington Coreloks 150gr Winchester silvertips 165gr Out of all this, corloks got .5" groups at 100 yards. Not once, but three times. I was shocked. Never seen Coreloks ever shoot. The bullistic tips sucked bad for some reason and my old favorite the sierras got 1.2" groups or less consistently. Winchesters got 1.5" groups. And remington Match got .9" groups consistently. Do ya think that the reason the coreloks shot so well cause they were the only ones 150gr? I mean this barrel is so thick, I figured it would shoot most wieghts good. Also, this Chrome lined barrel is so cool. No breakin needed, and very little copper fouling. |
RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
Just goes to show ya why it' s so important to try, huh! I' m like you...that surprises me. I think Core-Loks are fine hunting shells, but may have to re-think them as target shells as well!
Only problem is that my deer gun will barely shoot .5" groups at 25 yards...LOL I did see a similar thing last summer, but in 223' s. My 223 single loves the Back Hlls V-Max 55gr' s. My buddy' s #1B wouldn' t shoot a 3" group with them at 100 yards. He switched to those cheap FMJ Winchesters...and shot SEVERAL sub-MOA groups. Some goups were approaching .5" . |
RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
id venture to say maybe it was th ebullet weight and the twist of the barrel liking it a little better......my mauser liked 165 gr corelokts.....i hated their performance so i quit hunting with them.....but it liked them pretty good...pretty wierd...the cheap ammo shoots better......but i didnt like the performance and i dont care how good the shot is...the bullet falling apart wont give you a good kill...

RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
Now that is just amazing. I have always had good luck with Remington ammo as far as hunting performance, but at the range I always seem to get quite a few flyers in the box that tends to ruin my groups. Must have been a very good box of ammo.

RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
Told him today I want to see it again. Really disappointed in the way federals fly in this gun. Now that surprises me more.

RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
Well, I have a load using the 175-grain Corelokts in a 7mm Rem Mag. that shoot five into 1" @ 200 yards, and this load was developed in the late 1960' s. It HAS ALWAYS shot like this!!

RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
Well, I realize there are guns that will shoot them. My problem with all this is that gun doesn' t like silvertips, fed bullistic tips and others?

RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
I had the exact same experience with my Sako 308. Tiny groups with 150 grain core-lokts and 1.5 inch groups with 165 gr. Gamekings. However, I also tried other 150 grain bullets and had groups ranging from 1 to 4 inches. My rifle also does fairly well with 180 gr core-lokts. Go figure.

RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
The first time I ever shot one of my Swedish m96' s, I used rem corelokt factory loads. I pulled the first shot because I wasn' t used to the trigger, but the next 4 shots went within 3/4" at 100 yards. this rifle hasn' t any problems repeating this kind of performance with corelokt ammo, its usually my eyes that are the limiting factor- probably could shoot even better if the rifle were scoped.:D

RE: sub .5MOA with Coreloks????
I measured the wieghts of .308 150gr bullets. Out of 10 of them I got deviations from 145gr to 155gr. Thats huge. I did the same with Sierra Gamekings. Deviations of 2gr max. I then measured the OAL of 20 shells of factory loaded coreloks. Deviation from 3.53" to 3.59" . Thats also pretty huge. I don' t know. I will have to see it again to make sure. This FN Tactical has a barrel that is huge. The gun wieghs over 12lbs. With this bull barrel, vibrations and finickness should be at a minimum with a gun like this.
