Rifled slugs... how accurate?

How much accuracy should I expect to get out of a modified choke Mossberg 500 12 ga with rifled slugs? maybe 50 yards

50 yards sounds about right. But it's not going to be a tight group. I wouldn't use a Mod choke with rifled slugs though. Your best bet would be either a Cylinder or Improved Cylinder.

Thanks. Just how should I expect it to group? 4" at 50 yards? I don't know

I get 3" groups at 100 yards with a smoothbore Ithaca 37, so I would expect you to be able to do a bit better than that at 50 yards.

Oh that doesn't sound too bad. I've heard too many stories about not being able to hit the broad side of a barn with slugs from a smoothbore. I was scared to even try it. I guess I'm gonna have to give it a shot. I like the thought of a 1oz slug slapping a deer to the ground. To me it should be a fine close range gun

Please share your secret with the rest of the class.

Completly depends on the gun and the ammo. I have Rem 870 w/ the 18.5 in smoothbore slug barrel with 2x red dot, with the cheap Win super x slugs, I get 2-3 in at 50 yds, and 4-5 in at 75 yds. I couldnt hit chit with the Rem cheap slugs, try a few kinds, Rems, Wins, and Brenneke slugs.

It really is a crap shoot sometimes. My Mossberg 500 would only get around 4 to 5 inch groups at 50-60 yards regardless of what choke or ammo I used. Now my Browning A5 would get 3 inch groups at 100 yards with winchester super X rifled slugs. Both guns had adjustable clamp on fiber optic sights. And oddly enough both gun shot better with a modified choke than they did with the IC choke.

You just need to do some experimenting and see what you get.

theres no way to tell... expecially when shooting slugs through smooth bore, every gun is different. try several different brands and ammo, see what your shoots best.

No secret, just find what ammo your shotgun likes. It obviously is not that hard, there is another poster2 belowyour post that gets the same grouping. Find the right ammo and your in the money.
