Rifled slugs... how accurate?

The most accurate rifled slug in my mossberg 500 is a 2-3/4" Federal. I get 6" groups @ 100 yards with an I.C. choke tube. Plenty accurate for hunting. This little buck bit the big one at 75 yards, hit him through both lungs and he went around 60 after the shot leaving one heck of a blood trail.

I now have a Remington 870 wingmaster that shoots several brands of 2-3/4" rifled slugs through an open choke uncommonly well. I get 3" groups @ 100 yards with that one. Never had a chance to get a deer with that set up though.

The Mossbergwill not shoot 3" slugs worth a darn. Then I have a 20ga H&R that won't shoot any slugs well enough to consistantly hit a paper plate at 25 yards. It all depends on the gun.

I too get a 3" group with a smoothbore Mossberg 500 at 100 yards. My set-up is the Mossberg (of course) with Winchester Super X rifled "foster" slugs and a old Tasco shotgun scope. I sighted the gun in at 50 yards with the scope and did alittle tweaking out to 75 yards - At 100 yards I have to hold about 1/2 - 1 inch high, but I do get 3" groups.

My cousin uses this set-up as well and killed 2 doe at 90 yards back in 2003 back to back - 2 slugs on 2 deer in the vitals - 90 + yards.

My gun shots the winchesters very well....

I've got a 870 12 ga with the 18.5" barrel anda red dot scope and am shooting 2" groups at 5o yards using Brenneke Knockouts. Great combo if ya don't mind the kick

I'll second what some other people have said- it really depends on the gun and the slugs. Certain guns like certain slugs- can make a huge difference in how accurate it shoots.

For example, with Remington Sluggers, my Win. 1200 shoots 12 - 14" groups at 50 yards. No, that's not a typo- there's no guarantee that you're hitting a pizza box at 50 yards with that combo.

Now with Federal Premium rifled slugs, the groups shrink to about 3" at 50 yards and 5" at 75 yards. Not going to win any contest, but certainly good enough for deer hunting out to 80 yards or so.

Well with regular Remington Rifled Slugs I got a nice 4" group at 50 yeards with pop-up iron sights...I went to sight in my scope, but it was busted and wouldnt adjust so I took off the saddle mount, took a few shots with the pop-up iron sights on my slug barrell and the 4" group at 50 was ok with me.
