remington woodsmaster 742 question??

Has anybody had one and if so did you have any trouble getting your scope sighted in? The guys at the local gun shop said you could not put a scope on it because it has what they called a "floating barrell". They said that the iron sights are dead on but you couldnt sight a scope in on that model gun. Anyone ever heard of that?

Blue - to put it bluntly - those guys at that gun shop are idiots. You certainly can put a scope on a Rem 742. And you sight it in the same way you would any rifle/scope. Just be sure you rest the forearm on the bags and not the barre. (this goes for sighting in any rifle).
I suggest you find another gun shop with employees that have some intelligence.

Whoever told you that a scope couldn't be mounted on 742s is full of nonsense! Perhaps what they was talking about is the method of barrel being secured to reciever by a 3/4" nut. That don't lend itself to good accuracy but they WILL stay sighted in within their accuracy limitations.

I agree...

Over the years, we've had (5) 742's here, and we scoped all of them. The one i still have, is accurate and reliable...

I never had a problem with my 742 .308 that I got from my dad, I could shoot 1" groups with it. And I took many a deer with it, many at more than 100 yards. I had to retire it a couple years ago because it was starting to have problems feeding rounds. Took it to a couple different gun shops and non of them could figure out the problem. They thought it was the rails or something.

I agree with the others; you certainly can mount a scope on it. My 30-06 742 doesn't even have iron sights on it and I have a Leupold Vari-x-III in 2x7 on it. Dropped many a deer with this favorite rifle of mine. I know some think they are not accurate enough but I have no complaints and enjoy my venison just fine. Make sure your mounts are secure and I use a little non-permanent loc-tite on my screws. Sight in like you would any other rifle.
