Default its time for a new one

I am in the market for a new deer rifle. I have an 30.06 but I want something a little bigger. I will most always have shots 300 yards or less but want a gun capable of shooting 500 yards

8mm, 338, 358 and up for bore size. The 338 federal, 338-06, 358 Win, 35 Whelen all good to 300 yds and the big bullets get the job done to. And then there are the magnums, 325 Win SM, 8mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 340 Weatherby, 350 Rem Mag, 358 Norma Mag. Lots of choices, do you want sometning common or not so common? The 9.3 mm comes in a couple versions, 9.3x57, 9.3x64. Short action or long? Lots of choices.

I've shot some deer with a 338 win mag and it works great, actually I think it give less meat destruction than a 270 win and you can shoot from one end of a deer to the other without fail.

Do you think a bullet out of your 30-06 will bounce off a deer at 500 yards???? Trust me, it won't!

All it takes is practise at 500 with your 30-06 to get the job done! Your going to have to practise just as much with the new gun at 500 too...

Your .30-06 is perfectly capable taking a deer at 500 yards.

For deer you may not want to go bigger but go faster. I would consider the 270 WSM. It is very close to the 06 in KE but is much faster with bullets with similar sectional densities. 270 diameter bullets are very capable on deer sized game and even up to elk. This being said the 06 as others point out will take deer at 500 yards without breaking a sweat. The real limiting factor is the rifles accuracy not its power.
