RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
My choice would have to be a .300 Win.Mag ...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
FOR DEER AND ELK I WOULD SAY ANY OF THE 7MM MAGS. AS FOR A MOOSE I WOULD GO A BIT LARGER .338 BUT, IF IT WERE ONLY ONE GUN I WOULD SAY A 300. MY PEREFERENCE IS THE 300REM ULTRAMAG.

Either gun will work.

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
300 Winchester magnum

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
Well placed shots at reasonable ranges....
30-06 or 7MM Rem. mag. will do the job and do it well! |
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
The 300 win mag goes 300fps faster which generates 700 ft/lbs of energy. (Those numbers are close, but rounded...using 180 grain bullets out of both guns.)
The 300 win mag also shoots 6" flatter at 300 yards. I know that the 30-06 is more than capable of killing all 3 animals. However, if I were to go on a "once in a lifetime" moose/elk trip...I'd opt for the 300. That said, the 30-06 is the best deer gun around in my opinion. So I guess I'd buy 2 different guns! LOL |
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
If I had to pick one gun for all three, it would probably be the .35 Whelen. However, of those you mention, I'd go with the 30-06.

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
7mm mag all the way.if you reload it's even better yet but if not no big deal
|
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
7 mil. hands down.
|
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
338 Win Mag...
200 gr for deer, 250 gr for elk and moose. |
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
300 Win Mag
|
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
The 7mm mag shoots flatter than the 30-06 with more energy. It will be fine for moose.

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
7mm mag

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
I have never shot a moose; some people say they are hard to kill, and some say they are not. I would be safe and use a 300 mag. Good Luck.

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
I have not and probably never will hunt elk. I have however hunted both deer and moose. There are too many unknown variables to make a call on this one.
There are many rifles capable of taking all three animals but the things that will narrow that group down to "what is best" is which one is best suited for the environment you will be hunting (short range or long for example) and more importantly which rifle you are the most comfortable and accurate with. For me the best is my 45-70. For you it may be the 30-06. I know some people that swear by the 30-30 for moose and although I would never use it they have backed up their claims by tagging out just as cuccessful as the guys out using 300 Weatherby Mags. Make your own decision based on the capabilities and/or limitations of the environment, the firearm, and most importantly yourself. |
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
For those of you who shoot the 7mm Rem Mag, what do you find is the best bullet to use for hunting mule deer and/or elk? Is 150 grain big enough for elk or should I use 165 grain? If I use 165 grain, is that too big for mule deer? I guess what I am asking is, what would be a good all-around bullet I could use for both elk and deer or would I be better off using different bullets for each?

Sorry, my mistake. Please disregard my last post and I will re-post as a new subject.

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
300 WSM
|
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
300wsm for me also. Easy on the shoulder and just a tad bit lighter.

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
If your gonna use only off the shelf ammo go with the .338 Win.Mag., remember if you forget the ammo at home a local store may not stock "premium" ammo. If not any of the ones mentioned can perform good on moose with the proper bullet.

RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
I shoot a 7mm mag, 165 grn.boattail soft pnt.
On deer it is a little over kill, but as an all around big game rifle in my opinion, if it walks on 4 feet, I can kill it. Remember shot placement is by far way more important than power. A 7 mm is faster, flatter shooting and has more velocity than the 30-06 In my opinion it wouldn't be a hard choice to make. Good Luck and shootem in the heart. We are not hunters: We are big game population reduction specialist, be safe, shoot straight, and most of all be double sure of your target. |
RE: Best gun for deer, moose, and elk?
close to equal but I'm buying a 7mm rem mag for the reason that it has better range, a little more power than the 30-06 and moose could be taken with it without much problem, plus you dont want to overkill a deer with a 300 and ruin the front end.
