Long time 700 owners

Long time 700 owners, how long have you had your 700? What kind is it? (cal. & finish) How much do you use it? What do you like the most and least about it. Has it ever let you down?

Ive had a few 700s and quite a few other brands and models in my search for my "go to rifle". Im shooting a 700 mt lss 7-08 this year and Im really happy w/ it so far. I hope it lasts me a long time.

RE: Long time 700 owners

I have or have had in no particular order -

.260 Mtn. Rifle LSS just like your 7-08
.300 Win Mag LSS
.300 Win mag Sendero
25-06 BDL
22-250 ADL
22-250 SPS
7 mm Rem Mag BDL
30-06 BDL (Actually was a model 721)
7mm-08 VLS

All were very excellent shooters. The 22-250 SPS is the only one I would not purchase if given a chance to do it over. Cheesy rifle.

This is a representation of rifles made between 1960 ( I believe)and 2007 spread pretty evenly thru time.

Only two but love them,

.243 ADL that I put a american walnut, left handed thumbhole-right hand action stock on
.270WSM LH BDL, was a .270 BDL but had it rechambered for .270WSM with greem laminated wood stock

My dad has,

.30-06 BDL
.7mm-08 in the Model Seven

All of these guns will shoot close to or under 1" groups with factory ammo @ 100 yds.

I bought my first 700 (BDL) in.243 Win., in 1970 or 71. The bbl is nearly shot out now, but it still has "hunting" accuracy. No, it's never jammed or failed to function or fire in any way...

It was a real tac-driver for many years, but the many thousands of rounds that has went down the bbl, has taken it's toll...

I was going to get it rebored to 25-243, but i guess i'll leave it alone, as it just doesn't get much use these days.

I still have my first one I bought in 1975. It was a 700BDL in 6mm Remington. It is mostly a safe queen now. MY buddy bought a 700ADL in 30-06 the same day. It is the only rifle he has ever owned. He shoots about 100 rounds a year through it. It has never let him down, and he shoots a lot of deer with it. I think he would break his leg before he would put a scrratch on it. It still looks like new. Tom.

I have had a BDL version in .270 win. since 1985. This is the only rifle I hunt with eventhough I own a few others of different brands. Can't say it has ever let me down. Yes, I've missed a few deer with it, but it surely wasn't the guns fault. I also own a stainless steel heavy barrel version in .22-250 since 1998 which I really don't shoot too often. Other than occasional target practice, I really have no other use for this caliber.

1971 or 72 (Cant remember exact year) 700BDL 30.06. The bluing is still perfect on it and the wood is 90%. Looks great, shoots great!

RE: Long time 700 owners

I've had a 700 BDL in 7 Mag since 1966. It's been dragged all thru Alaska and Canada and the West 48.
It's been used so much I've had to refinish it 3 times. I hated the BDL stock so I found a Classic take off and dropped it in that. That rifle has taken a lot of game and has never failed me.

I have a 700 ss in 06 that is my go to gun. Reworked a few things on it. It's a nail driver.
(pillar bedded tuperware stock, bedded the recoil lug, free floated, tuned the trigger)

I have a model 7 ss in 308. Threw the trigger in the trash and put a Shilen on it.
That's my high altitude rifle. Sweet to carry.

I recently picked up a 700 Varmint in 308. Deadly accurate.

I have a 722 in 222. I'll put that old dog up against any body for pink slips.

And last but not least a 721 in 300 H@H. It was my Dad's. I totally restored it.
The trigger fell apart so I put a Timney on it. Now this is a great rifle.
I rarely shoot it. But it holds it's own extremely well.
I'm keeping that one at the ready for a special hunt next year.

I've read about several isolated issues people have had with the 700. I've never experienced any.
They are all that I use in the field.

Had a Rem 700 XCR in .30-06 for the past 2 years. It is extremely accurate. I really like it.

I have been using 700's since I was old enough to hunt. I used my dad's rifles, until I left the house and got my own. I currently have nine model 700's, in calibers ranging from .223AI to .375 H&H, and I've got a couple of 700 actions stuck aside for future projects.

Oh, yeah. I like them!

RE: Long time 700 owners

I've had three, curently own two. First one is a 1975 bdl in 270. It's a real shooter. I have no idea how many deer I've taken with it. My other one is a 700 ss in 7mm saum. I've onlytaken two deer with it. Nothing wrong with it, I just can't leave my old 270 at home.

RE: Long time 700 owners

i have owned maybe 10, but now have only 2 model 700s: a 243 bdl (bought in 76') that is used for deer and will be given to my first grandaughter in a few years - and a bdl s/s 270 win which wears a beddedhs precision stock. both rifles are very accurate and have never let me down on deer, hogs, elk, moose, caribou, sheep, goat, and other stuff. as a hunting firearm, the 700 is hard to beat. must be so as the 700 is the best selling bolt action sporting rifle in american history.

My first centerfire was a 700 ADL in 243 Caliber in 1984 which I still have an will never part with. Since then I have had probably 8-10 and still have 6. Never an issue with any of them...ever! I have a couple of adl synthetics now that get most of the hunting duty as they are so ugly some scratches and dings could only help the looks :D. Every 1 of these guns would group very well with some loads and a couple with any load. Accuracy, function or dependability have never been an issue. Nothing fancy...just pure ol bland accurate tack drivers. The 700 stock fits me extremely well off the shelf also. Love em!

Never owned a 700. But did have two of its' predecessors, a 721 in .30/'06, and a 722 in 222 Rem. Had extractor trouble with the 721. No problems whatsoever with the 722, though. In addition, using a 55-grain bullet, that 722 would shoot all its' bullets thru a nickel-sized hole as long as you kept shooting.....

I had a 721--.30-06, and 2 722's--.222, and .244. I never had a problem with either of the 722's. but I too had extraction problems with the 721. The extractor would sometimes slip over the rim, leaving the fired shell in the chamber. This was not an unknown problem in the 721, and occasionally showed up in the 760, as well.

I believe that Remington made a change in the shape of the extractor when they went to the 700. Anyway, I have had 5 700's (still have 2) and have never had an extraction problem.

I have a mid 80s 700bdl in 30-06 / 3x9 redfield / fajen stock. Gun has taken numerous deer. Was my stepfathers and he gave to me in 2000. I have not taken deer with it only carried it a few times on a hunt. I will be solely using it this year though. I did some gun trading and it is the only "deer rifle" I have left other than a TC hawken ml. I do have complete confidence in the 700 to take whatever I see as far as I can make the kill shot.

RE: Long time 700 owners

Right now I have 2 700BDLs in my safe. One a 30-06 (my son's) and a .270. The '06 must be about 50 years old. I picked it up used really cheap (for like $100). The trigger was absoultely horrible and the previous owner said it wouldn't shoot. I found out why. When I got it home I took the action out of the stock. Apparently the prev. owner never did this and just kept oiling the gun. The bedding area around the barrel lug was like a sponge. I dug the soft wood out with my pocket knife and a dremel tool until I hit solid wood. the trigger was full of rust. I soaked it in a can of kerosene for a couple of days then took it apart and scrubbed it good with an old toothbrush. Treated the action with a release agent and filled the stock with fiberglass bedding and put it back together.
Rifle is a pretty good shooter now and the trigger is almost perfect.
My 270 is about as accurate a production rifle as you can getwith the right load). Its about 40 or so years old and has never let me down. I've carried it on a lot of hunt in a lot of states. I've taken animals from literally spitting distance to 'way out there'. I've been playing, quite sucessfully, with other newer rifles so this old girl has been setting back in the safe and not seeing much action. But I don't think I will ever get rid of her.

Got my 700 the first year they came out with the "Mountain Rifle" (don't remember the year). Beautiful piece of wood with the ebony forend tip. What I like most about it is it's a great shooter. Mine is in .280 Rem. I handload a 140gr bullet and I'm good to go. I really like the trigger. Easy to adjust. Mine is set at 3lbs. Love this rifle.

Can anyone give me a breakdown on the different variations of the Model 700 that Remington offers? I don't understand the whole ADL, BDL, CDL, SPS, XCR, Mountain SS stuff. The other gun manufacturer's are easier for me for some reason.

adl, bdl, cdl, means a,b&c grade. SPS is special purpose synthetic, xcr is xtreme cond. rifle, mountain lss is a lightweight laminate stainless. Go to the rem. website for all the past and present variants.

Dan in AK, sweet remys, thank for the pics! Im guessing you dont buy you ammo at walmart though:D

Would you say the difference between the a, b, c is mainly the stock or is it a lot more? Probably the barrel as well I'm guessing but how much does this effect the shooting performance?

DM 10-30-2008 07:19 AM

RE: Long time 700 owners

Mostly it's the stock/bottom metal... There can also be bbl length differences, and other minor differences, but the bolt/action/bbl for the most partare the same...

Stock, bottom metal, sights/no sights, barrel fluting on some models, and metal finish (gloss, matte, etc). The mechanics are the same for all the standard 700 models: same action, trigger, barrel quality, accuracy potential, etc.

I have 2 Remington 700 rifles, one is a .243 Win.varmint and the other is a .223 Rem. Classic. Both of these guns have been consistent performers for me and have never let me down. I have had both of these guns for over 15 years and have lost track of how many Axis Deer, Feral Hogs, Feral Goats and Mouflon Sheep I have shot with them. Both of the guns have Timney triggers and replacement composite stocks. They both group under 1-1/2" at 100 yards with factory ammo. I have never tried reloads in them, but i'm sure they can do better.
The only thing that I don't like about the remington 700's are the triggers, but that is a problem with almost all factory production rifles. Lets put it this way, I wouldn't even consider getting rid of these guns. They are very reliable and built very solidly. Many of my fellow hunters also use 700's and I haven't heardof problems or complaints from any of them.

I have had a 700 pss in .300 win mag for a while now. It shoots great, no problems, could use a trigger job. Also just got a xcr in .30-06 but it is currently on the way back to Remington for a bolt problem right out of the box, never fired.
