325 WINCHESTER SHORT
 

Whats your take on the .325Win Short? Likes and dislikes? Does it have less recoil than a .300 Win. Mag or comparable to the .300 Win short?
A little big for whitetails. Any info or web sites on this caliber is appreciated.

MOre then needed for whitetails although i know a guy that hunts Canada every year and that in a Browning Ti with a Leupold VX7 is his setup. Yep he has a muzzle brake on it as well.

Tow - I really can't say what the recoil would be like in a full sized rifle. I have the 325WSM in the Browning Micro Hunter and it definately has more recoil than my Ruger 77 300 Win Mag. Of course your talking a rifle with scope that tops out a just a tad over 7 lbs. I shoot 200 gr Accubond bulletsover 68 grs of RL19 powder. I must say though that it is very accurate. I was hoping to see what it would do on elk last year but couldn't find one I wanted to drop the hammer on.
Saying that, and as much as I like this rifle, if I didn't have a 300 Win Mag, I probably would have gotten the 300 WSM.
And if Ruger would go back to the tang safety instead of that darn 3 position one, I might even look at the 338RCM.

Quality round, would be concerned that it may not be around in 20yrs....

.300 WSM is way more popular, so do you really need more than 180gr bullets? ask yourself that question, if yes, I'd look to a .338win mag, or how about a .45-70?

If talking a deer rifle, I'm a .270 Win. fan, or a .30-06, no need for more than that on a deer, so why kill yourself at the bench with recoil.

I have to agree with SAL - not sure if it will be around in 20 years. Even 10. And the 300 WSM is more popular. And 8mms in this country do not seem to be too popular for some reason. Look at the 8mm Rem Mag. A great chambering that never caught on. I think a lot of it has to do with bullet selection. But today it is much better than when the Remington came out.
But the 325 has a good deal of oooomph in a small package. I'm pushing a 200 gr Accubond at close to 2900 fps. And could go hotter - but the load I am shooting is accurate. Sub- MOA consistantly.

If you buy one make sure you buy all the ammo you'll need for the rest of your life....

I don't think that's necessary vabyrd. Look at the 348 Win. I was only made a short time and only in the Win 71. And you can still buy ammo, brass, dies and bullets for it.

I think there were 2 available loads at Cabela's and one at Midway. Just not enough bullet offerings to float my boat. Remington alone offers 21 configurations of the 30-06. I probably wouldnt get a 325 wsm, unless I found a deal I could'nt pass up, and a pile of ammo since I dont reload. Im sure there isnt much in North America you couldnt hunt with it.

I don't know what you're looking for in the 325 WSM, but I have a 338 Federal which launches a 180 grain bullet just 200 fps shy of the 338 Win Mag with recoil comparable to a 30-06. I have one and absolutely love it. Not too stiff on the shoulder, but plenty stout enough for anything in North America
