RE: best 4x scope for 30-30
get a leupold m-8 4x great scope for $150 or less! I havenumerous Leupold fixed power scopes; some of them are new. They are no longer called the M8. They are now the FXII and FXIII.The FXII 4x32 is a really good scopethat is about ideal for a .30-30:It is a superb low light scope. This year i hunted hogs in OK and TX with three guys from Germany: They came to the US with Leupold FXIII 6x42 scopes on their guns. All three claimed thatscope is as good as anything made on the European continent. Staying with a fixed power scope is a good idea. Basically a fixed power scope allows you to get a better scope for the same price as a cheaper quality variable. And a fixed 4X is the best for a young shooter-or any shooter for that matter. However a 2.5X is also a great scope for a short range "brush rfle". i like those 2.5 fixed power scopes: Unfortunately, very few companiesmake them. Weaver still makes a 2.5 but ishard to find. I shoot quite often on a military firing range. It is amazing to see a US Army troop trying to sight in his new civilian rifle at 25 yards with the scope set on 9 power or higher. One guy fired about50 rounds at 25 yards with the scope set on 14 power. Finally i could not stand it any longer and sighted his gun in for him. During WWII the worlds sniper rifles were equipped with scopes around 4X. The exception was some USMC rifles that had 8X and 10x Unertl scopes. Those snipers accounted for a lot of enemy dead at rangesin excess of 600 yards. |

There is a fellow who has as 2.5X Leupold on the Varmint Hunter Forum. His asking price is $250. The scope looks like new. Tom.
