Question on the .270

always been a bowhunter and a shotgunner. I just got a Mossburg .270 as a gift. My question is Will any .270 shoot out the gun and does anyone have any recomandations on what ammo and grain size to use. I will be hunting deer with it. Anyfeed back would be great. Thanks

Good Hunting

RE: Question on the .270

no, a 270 will only shoot 270Win.cartridges. It will not shoot 270 WSM, 270WSSM, or any modified cartridge designed to shoot a .277 caliber bullet. (Necked down .30-06 or .280 cartridges excluded)

RE: Question on the .270

130 gr is THE .270 bullet. Plain old Remington corlock or winchester power points are plenty good enough for deer.

RE: Question on the .270

Your best bet would be to try several different loads and see what groups best in your rifle. My Rem. 700 prefers Federal 130 NBT and my Browning BAR prefers Rem. 150 core lokt.

Second that. Any time I sight in a new rifle, the first ammo I shoot is Core-Lok. Then when I can't get the groups I want, I switch. So far, all I've ever shot are Core-loks. 130's out of my Model 70 are MOA.

RE: Question on the .270

Well you got your answers. Being a devote 270 owner for over 40 years and taking a lot of game with it in the east and west I can say that the 130 gr bullet is by far the best bullet for the 270 Win. I can't vouch for factory ammo but all I've ever used in mine were Sierra Game Kings or Nosler Ballistic Tips in the 130 gr size pushed by 55 gr of IMR4350 powder.

How long is your barrel, and what kind of velocity are you getting in that load?
Im thinking of switching the barrel on my savage 7mag to 270 so my father can use it. Brass is cheaper too.

RE: Question on the .270

It is an old Rem 700. I'm not sure of barrel length but probably 22".
