25-06 or 270 question

I'll ask this here as its the largest hunt forum on the net I think. Has anyone here killed really big game with 25-06 or 270. I mean big like moose, grizzlers, polar bear, lion, tiger etc.

I'm reshaping my gun life and selling all excess rifles and 'stuff ' to focus on one caliber. Am thinking on 25-06 or 270. Some thing fast flat ea$y on the shoulder and pocketbook as I may sell all my reload equipt too.

RE: 25-06 or 270 question

I hate to see a person selling all their equipment. But there is such a thing as only truly needing one rifle, and knowing how to use it. I would only consider a 30 caliber if I could only have one. My minimum would be a 30-06. Especially if you are selling your reloading equipment. You can buy 30-06 ammo for a pretty good price, and there is also a good bit of practice ammo available.

I would consider the 270, but the 25-06 would not even be in the running. Tom.

If you're really planning on hunting any of the animals you listed, then you'll need a bigger gun than either a 25-06 or 270. Those hunts are expensive and trying to hunt them on the cheap because you don't want a bigger rifle is crazy.
Use a 270 on moose...maybe but only if I had too. Personally I wouldn't consider going after the rest with anything less than a 338 Win Mag.

RE: 25-06 or 270 question

I decided to hell with my shoulder, and got a 45-70 Marlin XLR. Yesterday was my first day at the range with it. The recoil was less than a 12 ga. using the Hornady LeveRevolution carts. They are only 325 grain bullets, so I can imagine the bigger rounds kick a little more, but nothing to write home about. I figure, if I can't kill it with a 45-70, then I shouldn't be hunting it.

That's what I was thinking.A bolt action300 win mag if you plan on taking long shots or a lever action 45-70 if you think you might be a little more personal. At long range with my .270I would only use the scope to admire them. At close range withmy .270I would use my camo to hide or my boots to outrun my partner.

Polar Bear?

ETA: If you are only going to have one rifle, make it a 30-06.

moose, grizzlers, polar bear, lion, tiger
Moose- I'm sure this could be done with a 270, but this animal has some big bones. I would think 7mm mag, wsm or larger, probably a 30 cal would be sufficient.

Grizzly and polar bears- This is where the saying "size matters" comes to mind. Certainly no personal expierience, but I would think 338 or bigger. I wouldnt attempt these with a 270 thats for sure!

Lions- A 270 maybe big enough, no clue. It would be my personal opion that if you could afford the cost of a hunt like this, then you can afford a new rifle to hunt them with!

Tigers- I belive tigers are endangered everywhere they exsist, so no worries there. If youcan hunt them somewhere then this would the same thing as lions.

Thanks for the input guys. I sort of decided to keep my 30-06 just cause I had it so long. And I'll keep my LH .223 which I enjoy shooting cause its cheap and accurate. Still may go with a 270 or 25-06 to try it. I'm just tryign to get to where I'll have two rifles I use instead of 5 I dont.
