25-06 or 270 question

RE: 25-06 or 270 question
I would be perfectly happy hunting any one of the deer species we have with a .270 up to and including Alaskan moose. .270, .280, 30-06 etc... flip a coin IMHO.
But since you added things like polar bears to the list I would not hunt them with anything less than a 338 Win mag.
If I were doing what you are doing I would have a .22 center fire, either a .270 or 30-06, a 338 mag of some kind, and a big bore like a 416 or 458. Four cartridges and you could hunt anything in the world.

RE: 25-06 or 270 question
back in the day the world record polar bear was taken with a 270 win. that particular bear has been surpassed, but it wasthe record at that time.i have taken several moose with a 270 win and it works fine if the shooter does his/her part. that said, i'd suggest the 30-06. it's killed every animal you listed and all the rest you didn't mention, and is quite sufficient for anything in north america (again, if the shooter does his/her part).

RE: 25-06 or 270 question
i would suggest a 257 weatherby mag up to elk sized game...maybea 280 rem....but for the biters i dont think i would chance it with anything under a mid-big 30 cal..its kinda funny that in all the years of gun making no has ever hit upon that magic rifle caliber..one gun to rule them all....

RE: 25-06 or 270 question
Close to half of the hunters in the group I moose hunt with use either a 270Win or 270WSM.The rest are a mix of 30-06,300 win mag or 338.Much the same as many other big game hunts people should worry less about choice of caliber and more about shot placement, type of bullet and being consistently accurate with whatever rifle they are carrying.Make your first shot count!

RE: 25-06 or 270 question
I decided to hell with my shoulder, and got a 45-70 Marlin XLR. Yesterday was my first day at the range with it. The recoil was less than a 12 ga. using the Hornady LeveRevolution carts. They are only 325 grain bullets, so I can imagine the bigger rounds kick a little more, but nothing to write home about. I figure, if I can't kill it with a 45-70, then I shouldn't be hunting it.

RE: 25-06 or 270 question
For North America the 270win is great it kills deer elk and moose just fine. For the big bears the 30-06 has killed more bears than any other cartridge and it most likely will continue to do so for a long time. I would prefer the 35whelen loaded with 250gr partitions over the 30-06. Remember the 222rem has killed a slew of polar bears! In a sako it was the prefered native polar bear cartridge.
I this world of new and newer guns Anyone with a 222rem, 270win, and a 35whelen can be very well fitted for any North American game. Through in a 22lr and a 12ga and you pretty much complete.

I'll ask this here as its the largest hunt forum on the net I think. Has anyone here killed really big game with 25-06 or 270. I mean big like moose, grizzlers, polar bear, lion, tiger etc.
I'm reshaping my gun life and selling all excess rifles and 'stuff ' to focus on one caliber. Am thinking on 25-06 or 270. Some thing fast flat ea$y on the shoulder and pocketbook as I may sell all my reload equipt too.

When I lived in Alaska, I used a 270 carbine with the 150-grain Nosler Partition bullets for everything in the state. BUT, I never tried it on big bears!! However, there was a doctor's wife in Fairbanks who used her 270 on Polar bears with good results. Her load was the 150 Nosler at 2900 FPS MV....
For lion & tiger (if there is anyplace left on earth where you can shoot tigers!!), I would use nothing smaller than a .375 or a .416 Rigby!!
