Need Your Expertise

Guys,

I cannot seem to find any information on the net that compares the .22 caliber centerfire ballistics. I am interested in a bolt action varmint rifle but have no clue as to which one. I think my average shots will be around the 150 yards or less, but am more interested in a good flat shooting rifle with ranges out to the 250 mark at least. I have convinced myself the .22 caliber is what i want, but need more information about the .220 swift compared to the .22 hornet, the .223, and the 22-250. My quarry would be mainly crows and ' yotes/foxes, but may get an opportunity or two at smaller game at times. Gun prices are always a concern, not expecting to have the best nor the worst, just looking for a good handling and shooting gun with a crisp, clean (and ajustable) trigger. Also, since I dont reload rifle bullets at this time, another factor might be the cost of one bullet over another. This would be one gun I would expect I' d be shooting quite alot. I appreciate any and all help.

GaBowman, check out this wed site www.chuckhawks.com to compare ballistics. Go under guns and shooting on line for more information. Good luck.

My choice would be a 220 Swift in a Weatherby Mark V SVM Single Shot, or 22-250 in a Winchester M-70 Stealth. Both guns and calibers will do very well on varmints. Good luck.

Buy a Savage sporter weight rifle in .223, not a bull barrel model.
It exactly matches the description you gave as to what you need in a rifle.

For what you want to do, I' d go with the .223. The 22-250 gives you a flatter shooting rifle, but the the .223 will defiantely get the job done at 300 yards. You' ve also got a wide range of factory ammo availiable as well as tons of cheap practice military surplus ammo.

Gabowman since you don' t reload I would suggest getting a 223 Remington. Ammunition is very inexpensive and can be ordered in case lots for around 3.00 -3.50 a box of 20.I have a Winchester " Coyote" in 223. So far I' m very satisfied with it.Bass Pro a couple weeks ago had them for 529.00.

Any good bolt action in a 223 Rem would be my recomendation . I have a 22-250 and the 220 swift ,but seldom use either one of them .

The 223 would suit your needs very well & will have a much longer life than the other cals would.

If your after a heavy barrel then check out the tikka continental,I have one in 7mm-08 & am most impressed & am actually considering buying one in 223.

Good shooting
